Pros

Very good pay. Wish they would have given me a chance. Lost job but they offered me another one and I accepted. Waiting to hear back from them.

Cons

Don't like split shift. Have to travel to far each day. Wish I had weekends off.

The USPS is changing

Pros

The workplace is unionized which means more protection and better benefits for permanent workers. It is a steady paycheck. Some local unions are active and democratic. Others need improvement. All the unions can be improved by members becoming active.

Cons

Almost all new employees start as temps with a path to career employment. New employees are worked very hard, often required to work the graveyard shift at processing plants. The USPS top management is heavily influenced by privatizers and austerity measures meaning speedup and harsh supervisors. Very few postal workers work the standard 9 to 5 with weekends off so this puts strains on your family life. It usually takes about 2 years to gain permanent career status and you earn nothing toward retirement in that period.
