Pros

The pay is good and the atmosphere can be pretty relaxed (at the Remote Encoding Centers, at least, you can listen to your MP3 the whole night and you get a 5 or 10 minute break each hour, not including lunch). Co-workers tend to be friendly, or at least polite. Feedback is easy to get, and very honest. Supervisors tend to be helpful, and are ready to answer questions. If they don't know the answer, they'll find out for you or direct you where to ask. It isn't difficult to get time off, but there are a lot of rules about how and when. It's best to ask in advance. There are many different shifts available, so it shouldn't be hard to fit any schedule.

Cons

It's monotonous work, so it can cause muscle soreness. Sometimes the rules change for no obvious reason, but they do a good job of keeping you notified of these changes. T.E.'s low on the pecking order get the shaft on holidays, but after a year or two of working there you ought to be high enough on the list to get the days off. Christmas season is a drag, with two or more weeks on a special holiday schedule where you may be held up to 12 hours (usually you stay 8-10 hours, not including lunch). They way it is decided who gets to move from being a T.E. to being a career (with better pay and benefits) makes no sense, so be warned.

Pros

In todays society, having a union backed job gives you a small measure of security against downsizing. Although my original job was abolished, I was relocated - but I still have a job. The salaries and health benefits draw most.

Cons

A tangible lack of disdain and respect by management;favoritism; lots of negativity and backstabbing by coworkers. A pervasive feeling of being institutionally controlled by the system- yes, jail. We fall under federal jurisdiction yet, upper management find ways of twisting federal laws to save the usps money or outright breaking laws such as the FMLA act. We are constantly reprimanded for using FMLA, sick leave for legit causes. I could go on and on...

Pros

The benefits are fantastic!! There are opportunities to work anywhere in the United States. They are tied to a labor contract and employees have union representation and protection. Thirteen days of sick leave annually which carries over year to year. Paid time and half after eight hours a day and double time after ten hours. One of the few companies that still offer a pension. Low cost health insurance for my family. Great vacation time up to five weeks after 15 years.

Cons

Delivery of mail is the most important mission...however, because of the liberal sick leave some employees take advantage leaving fewer people to pick up the slack. Management is very unrealistic about expectations. Typically a six day work week.
