Pros

Nice campus environment (if you work on campus - but many positions are located off-campus), availability of convenient university resources (library, rec center, shops and dining, entertainment). The department in which you work is what determines your actual work environment and conditions - and this can vary greatly.

Cons

If you are in a screwed-up department, poor leadership, office politics and completely ineffective work processes may drive you crazy. Don't expect a raise - no raises since 2005, and those were only about 2%. Fight hard for a high starting salary because that's where you'll be for years.

Pros

Benefits are fantastic and reasonably priced. Work/life balance is the best I've seen--rarely is overtime expected or even needed. And the job is relatively stable.

Cons

In one word: management. The middle management level is completely bloated, and managers seem to be long-time employees rather than expert leaders. (I realize the two aren't mutually exclusive, but in my area, they seem to be.) Management knows less than employees and, because of their ensuing insecurity, doesn't provide staff with the appropriate latitude to do their jobs. Even the more competent managers lack vision and leadership. If you chafe at being supervised by someone who doesn't have the ability and knowledge to do your job, then UCLA External Affairs is decidedly NOT for you. Also: bureaucracy and its ensuing inefficiencies can be problematic.

Pros

Great flexibility, great job security, good place to retire, good benefits (health/vision/dental). Little to no stress, little overtime. More than average time off with many recognized holidays (Caesar Chavez, President's Day etc).

Cons

Low opportunities for growth, low salary compared to industry. Oftentimes, great work and good jobs go unnoticed or unappreciated. Employees pay for parking (approx $60+/month). Leadership and management is lackluster at best, if things are working well it's great but when it isn't don't expect any significant change. Some politics from higher and middle management that can negatively effect morale and work.
