Pros

Lots of holidays and time off Low pressure because nobody cares 100 percent remote because of lack of real estate

Cons

Upper management is out of touch and tone deaf, with no tech skills. Universally hated my everyone who isn't new or a chronic brown noser. Directorships are populated by lackeys from their previous tenure at USC. A "new org" was created requiring everyone to apply for new jobs or get fired. Many people got pay cuts for taking jobs with more responsibilities. They are gonna do it again and fire a ton of people in trying to smash all 40-something IT groups together. Massive waste, projects will spend hundreds of millions then have the plug pulled with nothing to show for it Braindead change control Vapid staff meetings with obligatory Land Acknowledgements that we all make fun of privately Zero culture Most long time (pre 2013) staff are just waiting for their pension to max out to bail Zero career advancement opportunities, subpar pay

Pros

Lots of good people with good intentions work here Great potential for work/life balance Potential to define the job however you want it to be

Cons

Decisions take a while to be made Long vertical structure/chain of command Pay rate is low compared to the private sector Academic environment can foster eccentric personalities and department cultures The squeakiest wheel often gets the grease
