Pros

Lots of bright, sharp people trying their best to do a good job and succeeding on the whole. Excellent benefits package. Nice new offices on the whole and a strong investment in L&D. Much stronger cost focus, but restricted by the antiquated public sector accounting approach. Once you are in you are pretty much safe.

Cons

Can be easy to be a small cog in a large machine. Very frustrating for those from the private sector. Litigation culture means everyone spends an inordinate amount of time covering their back. Turf wars between senior management prevent clear communication of vision. Very difficult to get rid of underperforming staff - and there are a few left! Often little drive to change things in some areas. Lots of turnover of staff in some areas too.

Pros

Good support in professional development - TfL have contributed £23k towards an MBA at London Business School and some support in terms of time off. Very family orientated environment with a really strong emphasis on work/life balance. The office empties out at 17.30 and the last person will leave by 19.00. Good benefits package including final salary pension and 2 free travelcards.

Cons

Little staff turnover means that there is little natural upward progression in terms of promotion. You have to fight for opportunities and constantly push for promotion otherwise it won't come naturally with good performance.

Pros

Work life balance and a relaxed work pace. You will have great working hours and a lot of support if you need to balance the challenges life sometimes throws at you. I have had enormous support over the years. If you thrive in a slow paced, political environment, then this organisation is for you.

Cons

old fashioned directing style from management and a lack of co-ordination all interspersed with a ton of politics. HR is in a particular mess with a "personnel culture" which is now being pulled kicking and screaming in the 21st century. Loads of benefits, but no sense of how to promote talent, how to build loyalty and how to stop the running feuds. HR is not strategic at all.
