Pros

There are very few. The only positive I can really give is that the regular members of staff are often very bright, funny and friendly people. I was only there for nine months but during that period I made some great people who turned into really good friends.

Cons

How long have you got? Management: I suppose the biggest con is the fact that the managers are all completely and utterly inept. I met managers from a couple of different European offices and also had quite a few e-exchanges with some in the US, which is where the company's headquarters is based. Unfortunately they are nearly always rude, obnoxious, arrogant and really rather ignorant. They have often advanced up the TransPerfect ladder due to their resilience and ability to deal with the quite appalling internal politics that takes place. They are, in my experience at least, never actually equipped to manage people. They have got experience of managing accounts, often accruing accounts and therefore building their book of business through luck more than judgement. They then tend to take on an approach where 'one size fits all.' This is to suggest that they treat all of their team members in exactly the same way and do not consider individual and, perhaps more importantly, cultural differences. Cultural differences: That last point is something that particularly frustrated me during my time at the company. Americans have a very different approach to most other nationalities. I am British and felt that the 'sell at all costs' approach was slightly unethical. I was encouraged at points to exaggerate our value proposition to clients in order to try and impress them. This probably works in the short term, but in the long term I have no doubt that it would come back to haunt you. Unrealistic targets: The targets set by the managers are often completely untenable. By setting these targets they immediately set people up to fail. It gives the impression that people are underperforming even if they are doing their best. Punishments: Managers are very keen to punish team members who do not reach the quite ludicrous targets that are set. One such punishment for failing to reach targets that was suggested but never actually implemented was for the member of staff concerned to have to sing a song in front of the whole team. It was only when other team members informed the manager that they did not agree with it that she relented. This sort of humiliation does not encourage someone to perform well, instead it creates resentment and anger. That sort of behaviour is indicative of the company, and goes to show just how ill prepared people are when they are given management positions. Relentless reporting: Without a shadow of a doubt the most tedious part of the job. They don’t tell you when you do the interview that you have to submit an end of day (EOD) report EVERY SINGLE DAY! Often this is follow by and end of week (EOW) and in some cases even an end of month. Essentially you end up regurgitating the same information three times. It is utterly pointless and a complete waste of time. It also gives you the impression of being back at school and also being constantly surveyed. Not a good way to keep up morale. Systems & poor quality: TransPerfect has many internal problems. You only have to google the company to find articles explaining the extremely ugly relationship that exists between the two CEOs. The company has been told by a court of law that it has to be sold and it is currently looking for a buyer. While this is going on the management team is absolutely relentless in ensuring that it maximises every possible deal, while keeping costs to a minimum. Until the company is sold there will be no investment in new electronic systems which are badly needed. The sales teams and various other departments are using programs that are anything between 8-15 years old. They are confusing to use and more importantly very time consuming. The other crucial element is the quality that TransPerfect provides its clients. I was always receiving or hearing about complaints made by clients who were saying that the quality of the work TransPerfect was providing was simply not good enough. Furthermore, clients are charged very high rates, way above the market rate, and very little of that money gets fed back to the linguists who produce the work. It is therefore obvious to see where the problems lie. It is a vicious circle where management ensure their pockets are well lined, and then don’t pay the linguists who produce the work a reasonable sum. The company simply cannot continue in this vein.

Pros

I worked at TransPerfect for about a year. I had no idea what I wanted to do, and I was exposed to a lot of different companies and industries. - You are given a lot of autonomy over your clients. - All of the places I interviewed at to escape TransPerfect were very impressed with my experiences.

Cons

-Severely underpaid for the amount of hours you are expected to work. Very hard to be promoted and earn a decent salary. -Heard reports from younger female employees about being sexually harassed by management at the annual conference. -No work life balance. You are expected to be working around the clock - weekends, holidays, and after hours. Some few examples -My boss made be wake up at 5 am on a Saturday for a client project multiple times. Received an angry email from my boss to respond to a client who had a non urgent request at 10 pm on the Saturday after Christmas. - Even though you are expected be on the clock 24/7 don’t expect to be given a laptop or anything to help you.

Pros

You will have some excellent coworkers, many of whom come from all around the world. TransPerfect truly is a global company, so you'll be exposed to many new languages and cultures.

Cons

If you have previous experience working in an office... any office environment at all... you should be very wary about applying/accepting a job with TransPerfect. - The TransPerfect reviews on Glassdoor about work/life balance are completely accurate. You basically get assigned accounts and you're at the mercy of the client/representative who dictates your deadline. There will be multiple nights a week where you're stuck at your desk making sure projects are assigned/claimed to vendors and active in the company's system. How late, you ask? Use your imagination. That 8:00 dinner date or 10:00 movie you had planned, though? Those are in jeopardy if you sign on the dotted line at this company. - At the same time, I'm a proponent of working late and keeping on top of my work. However, many workplaces will offer you compensation for those extra hours you log to make sure your assignments are completed on time and thoroughly checked to meet each explicit instruction. That train of thought is nonexistent with TransPerfect. They attempt to assuage this by offering quarterly bonuses but believe me, these "gifts" come nowhere close to covering the extra time you've spent on your assigned work. - The simple solution would be to just take on a workload that you can handle, correct? That great idea is out the window when you're pressured to take on more accounts than you can handle. Even when you're mentally and physically maxed out for your capacity, there is an expectation that you can always take on more. - You might see where this going by now: High turnover. Yes, when those around you see what a sham this environment is and are fortunate enough to find a better paying job that isn't creating an ulcer in their respective stomachs, those vacant jobs will likely find a way onto your plate. So to sum up thus far, we've covered late hours, unfair compensation, and high volume workloads that upper management doesn't want to hear you complain about. Moving on... - That vacation you have planned where you'll be out of the office for a few days? It's going to be a wonderful escape EXCEPT for the fact that you're responsible for finding coworkers to cover all your projects while you're away. To your coworkers' credit, many will help you out since they know how difficult this can be. Still, it's not out of the question to be asked to work remotely on your vacation (this happens!) And even if you manage to find coverage for all your projects, you inherit any mistakes, issues, and/or incomplete work upon your return. - Finally, you're not going to get hardly any time off in terms of holidays. This could also be filed under the work/life balance complaint but in the eyes of upper management, your job is the apparent equivalent of someone who cures cancer or fights crime. The paid holidays are minimal and if you expect to have them off, see the above paragraph about begging your coworkers to cover for you. Oh, and if there is severe weather, you'll be expected to work remotely if you can't make it to the office. No power? No access? That's your problem. I shudder to think what these people made their employees do during a disaster like Hurricane Sandy. If you've been paying attention, that last sentence contains a word that perfectly describes TransPerfect: A disaster. If you read all of this, please proceed with accepting a job with TransPerfect at your own risk. If you didn't read all of this, you'll find out what you signed up for soon enough.
