Not The Container Store It Used to Be

Pros

Great brand to build your resume.

Cons

If you are considering a role at The Container Store's home office, do your due diligence in researching the company. Though often promoted to candidates as "voted best places to work", be sure to check the date when the company was last awarded this title. Unfortunately, the Company's adaption to COVID era working from home has made any work life balance to be nonexistent. Lack of trust from upper management to employees is palpable. There is a shocking lack of strategy from C-level management, seeping its way to lack of ownership. Every project is deemed URGENT but the company lacks the resources to fully strategize and execute to take the business to the next level. Resources are lean, and, as mentioned, often pulled to tackle HOT requests, leaving no room to optimize business as usual. Compensation is abysmal.

Pros

Good Pay, good employee discount and good product to spend it on!

Cons

I worked with the Container Store for 10 years as a store manager. When I first started with the company it really was a great place to work. Then, unfortunately like almost all companies that go public, things started to change. Overall things didn’t change much at first, then little by little it started to show. It became more obvious as the company started slipping down the list of Fortune top 100 places to work, when eventually they disappeared completely. It just went to show how unhappy employees were becoming but still corporate were blind to the complaints. Things were not improving, even in my own store, tenured employees started to leave and the requests from corporate were becoming more and more ridiculous. Then Covid hit and I was so disappointed in how the company handled the beginning of the crisis. Keeping stores open and not caring about their employees. Eventually stores closed and have of course now reopened. Since the reopening it has been unbearable. Ridiculous requests from corporate and little to no notice of sales and price changes. The stores, are drowning in tasks, sale set ups, huge trucks, price changes and reworking entire aisles, all with little to no notice. There is no staff, most declined to come back after the shut down because they didn’t feel safe. So it leaves the stores in shambles with no support from corporate, area directors or executives. I made the difficult decision after over 10 years of service to leave. I can see the writing on the wall and unfortunately the Container Store is headed to oblivion because of the blindness of the executives..... pity....

Pros

Excellent products, great discount, amazing co-workers.

Cons

Oh boy. so many changes, and few of them are positive. I've worked over ten years and the company has changed so much. Not for the better. The focus is 100% on closets, sadly, neglecting the many wonderful products in the rest of the store. Every day it is closets, closets, closets..... Also, sadly the "training' that is so often hyped is now a myth. Don't believe a word of it Ten years ago the training was amazing! Genuine, legitimate product knowledge. Now training consists of "read this one page sheet" and that's it. Of course no one reads the sheet of info, because it is not in the least helpful. So do not believe the claim that training is extensive and thorough because it absolutely is not.
