The Wild Wild West (or 1950s) Why Even Have HR?

Pros

Compensation is good and despite the lack of any form of culture, the people who work there are nice and support one another.

Cons

HR turns a blind eye to multiple reports of sexual harassment and discrimination. How does it look to your entire staff when MULTIPLE people know of an offender and you keep them in their highly paid position for MONTHS? Rumors and talk about all of this is rampant- and where there is smoke there is fire. Wild parties at the NSM? Affairs where the junior person is let go? A friend of mine was passed on a raise because they were out on maternity leave- and the company even admitted it! I guess they aren't fearful of litigation. Also what a great example to show to your younger employees who are the "future" of your organization- no room to grow professionally and personally at Terumo, kids! Or how about the multiple inappropriate manager / subordinate relationships?! People barely bother to hide them because they know their is no consequence except a slap on the wrist and a "threat" to take alcohol away from next year's NSM. It is really insane- how there aren't lawsuits left and right is really beyond me Aside from the BIG issues above- HR is widely untrusted across the company- its a running joke. The majority of HRBPs are unfriendly unapproachable and IF you do decide it is worth your time to bring something to them, they never make any actualy documentation or reports (are exit interview notes taken and signed by the employee who took the time to talk before leaving? NO) This leaves plenty of room for truths to "go away" or stretched and changed to fit individual agendas.

Pros

No micromanaging, but little guidance. Opportunity to run your business without interference Work lIfe balance for the most part

Cons

Sr Management is an old boy network. If you are not in the club with the leader, you are a nobody. Sales and marketing rule this company. Others are treated as "shared services". This term is openly used and used in a condesending fashion, as in "shared services costs x amount of dollars to support sales". Leadership in Elkton manufacturing is also old boy network. If you agree with the all of the plant manager's ideas, you are in. If you disagree with any of those ideas, you are out.

Undervalued and Under Compensated

Pros

Lots of opportunities. Can build close camaraderie with team members. Ok benefits.

Cons

It takes too long to climb the ladder. Constantly picked up the slack of others (higher title than me) who weren’t as competent. Never felt I was ever paid my true worth. Everyone was too busy to do their jobs. Lots of politics and drama. Minimal perks. Hard to deal with the daily frustrations when you never feel you are properly compensated for all your contributions.
