Pros

I really don't think there is another program out there that will provide you with the opportunity to face such personal growth in the way TFA does. Not only do you strengthen your professional skills, but you grow as a human being and member of society. The job is exceptionally rewarding and at the end of the commitment, it will feel like every difficult day was worth it.

Cons

It is INCREDIBLY difficult and time consuming. The pay was exciting for me at first as it was my first job out of college, but I quickly learned that the amount of work required far surpasses the amount you are compensated. Training is limited and it takes a truly resilient individual to stick around through the tough days with only intrinsic motivation to help students. However, again, it is rewarding work and it felt worth it.

Pros

You can potentially help youngster who come from traditionally underserved communities. It looks good on a resume, I suppose, for lack of anything else positive to say

Cons

Absolutely no continued support Terrible communication Meaningless development In the business of staying in business and don’t actually strive to accomplish their “mission” Too focused on coming in and saving the students in community rather than becoming part of the community and working to help it strengthen organically. A tried and true Kool-aid drinking organization. If you make it through the long, convoluted hiring process, open your eyes to what they say versus what they do- there’s a severe disconnect.

Pros

I enjoyed my immediate team, my manager was great. I was able to travel.

Cons

I worked on a national team and enjoyed my immediate team, but not the broader team. There were many people in the org that didn't hold themselves accountable to their mistakes, which created a bad culture. From my experience on staff for nearly 5 years, there is a lot of job insecurity and employment doesn't seem to be based on merit. It is really difficult to fire someone who is ineffective and hurting the team. On the otherhand, there have lots of layoffs and team shuffling. You are expected to work long hours, a TFA standard work week is 45 hours instead of 40, and often times I'd work closer to 60 to complete my work. The org has made some promises around layoffs and team structures and those were not followed. They kept their promise for a year and then restructured again. Many decisions were made top-down with little to no input from those largely affected, so it left people feeling like their opinion didn't matter.
