      How Not to Run a Call Centre

      Pros

      For all its criticisms, Teleperformance recruits people who have 'big personalities' and ensures that it has a warm and, at times, friendly environment. Teleperformance has always adopted a 'carrot and stick' approach towards career progression and development, rewarding people for positive behaviour and criticising those who feel to fall into their mould of expectation.

      Cons

      Teleperformance does few things right. From the offset, Teleperformance talks about 'career development' but is more interested in ensuring that people are in their seats 'taking calls' and, when opportunities do arise, it falls to those who are favoured by the existing management. Teleperformance does not recognise that people have lives that sometimes result in them being unable to attend work, punishing absence and lateness with severe punishment. The management structure rarely changes and, when Teleperformance refers to 'internal recruitment', it refers to other campaigns, rather than within a single campaign. Too often, managers are not product trained on the campaign or team that they are managing and the expectations (or targets) being set are deliberately designed to create a high-pressure environment that does not reward success. There is no incentive or bonus scheme for the majority of campaigns and the basic salary, as is often the case with outsource call centres, barely affords people the luxury to live, let alone enjoy a comfortable lifestyle.

      Everyone was in the same boat, no one really seemed happy to be there.

      Cons

      Staff morale very low, no one was treated well.

      A mixed bag, sadly more negative than positive

      Pros

      - If you're in the right position, you can end up with a very pleasant albeit frustrating experience at the same time - Some 'legends' who will make you feel at home and will be supportive - Not a stuffy corporate environment - Occasional morale-boosting activities/events - Occasional recognition of contributions/achievements - Convenient central location

      Cons

      - Experience and progression opportunities strongly dependent on what campaign you're placed on, your responsibilities, the hours of your position, your colleagues/team structure and whether or not management like the cut of your jib; get an admin position and you can get a little too comfortable - Salary very poor relative to one's responsibilities, expect an annual payrise of a couple of pence extra per hour - IT infrastructure seriously lacking (e.g. Windows XP spec computers updated to 7 but can't handle them; error reporting procedure inefficient; inadequate IT staff to agent ratio) - Preferential/unequal treatment - High turnover of staff - Shockingly inadequate recruitment process (just need a pulse) evidenced by high turnover of staff, behaviour of recruits and their lack of respect for the environment - Training of said recruits inconsistent - Dubious selection of Team Leaders at times; prepare to experience some unscrupulous micromanagement of you're unlucky enough - Atmosphere sometimes resembles primary/secondary school
