Fantastic work life balance

Pros

TD really prioritizes flexibility, many of the Marketing leaders are women so there is a real focus on making it easy to accommodate commitments and children, by virtue of them having to manage that in their own lives. I've heard men at TD say the same, staying home with a child who is sick or picking them up from school. TD is an incredibly inclusive workplace, people really are comfortable being themselves.

Cons

There is age-ism when it comes time to discuss promotability. I've seen talented people be passed up for roles simply because another person has been around for longer. It feels as though you have to have a family and/or be of a certain age to be considered for a people manager role, for ex. There is also a big focus on hiring "preferred candidates" which of course will work in your favour if you are identified as one, but otherwise you can go through the whole interview process only to find out that they had a favourite all along and were just checking boxes to say they looked at other candidates. There are a number of seriously toxic people who seem to not be fire-able, perhaps for fear of a lawsuit. Individuals who are verbally abusive, inappropriate in the office, sexual innuendos by men who like to make women uncomfortable, it's surprising to see at a place like TD.

Pros

This is a good job for 2 types of people: 1. A recent college graduate WITH A PLAN. do not come here and expect to find a career, you MUST have a broader plan and use this as a steeping stone. 2. Someone who just needs a decent pay check and has no desire to advance. TD pays decent wages and has ok-ish benefits and it is better than a minimum wage job.

Cons

The managers of Retail Credit actively discriminate against age, if you are over 25, you have no chance of management or promotions. They aggressively promote younger people and they do not value any experience at all. Also they have 0 work life balance. Management loves to say "your hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed" however the workers have shifted that phrase to "your hard work and dedication continue to go unnoticed"

High sales pressure

Pros

Colleagues generally get along Good banking products Good place to learn and start out

Cons

Sales pressure is way too high. They pay below market average salary and expect super star performance, or they'll grill you in the name of "coaching". I was worried about taking sick days because I might not make enough sales to make it up. They subtly encourage borderline unethical sales by not disciplining and promoting people with this kind of behavior. The sales practice is way too revenue focused and product pushing, but not client focused. And when I first joined many years ago as a student, I like the long opening hours because I can get different shifts; but as I go into more permanent positions and want a regular work-life schedule, that's not possible. Lunch time could be as early as 11 AM, as late as 5 PM within a week, there was rarely a week I wasn't required to work on weekends. This would be really tough for people have family. Getting a promotion is less about performance, more about playing politics. Overall terrible place to work. I'd say if you are still in school or just graduated, want to get your feet wet, that's fine. But once you reach financial advisor/manager customer service level, find a good exit, or you'll just grind your life away.
