Pros

Knowledgeable sales staff. Great customers and wonderful porducts and good values.

Cons

As an employee of Sur la Table, though I am one of the "chosen few", I myself have been berated and embarrassed by my manager more than once on the floor, in front of other employees, and customers. Although it was a shocking experience, I came to realize that this is the typical treatment of employees by the management. I witnessed this happeingin to other employees, and in fact, to my own assistant manager by the store manager and to the store manager by the district manager. I began to realize it's akin to a dysfunctional family and realizing the corporate culture of Sur la Table involved such distasteful behavior, I decided that my talents would serve better to another company.

Pros

Customers are wonderful and it is a pleasure to share your love of food and cooking. The stores are beautiful and offer a wonderful selection. Employees are empowered to do whatever it takes to make it a positive experience for the customer.

Cons

The company is obsessed with the almighty dollar. Communications from the corp level and DM level speak to you as if your were an idiot. There is no recognition for hard work, and no support unless you are one of the favored people or you make your numbers. Trying to sell a $3000 coffee machine is not the "fun" that corporate claims it is. Maybe they should not have bought so many. Sales associates receive few hours, unless they are in a high sales volume store, yet they are expected to be "available" any time needed. The Training Program is hardly a program. There is no time to learn much when there are 2 people on the sales floor and you are expected to give exceptional service and complete tasks. Tasks are piled on and no extra hours are given. Wake up guys. You are going to lose some really good people with this attitude. After having been a customer, I am shocked at how the employees are treated (from management on down). It is incredible that they can still be nice to the customers.

Pros

The 40% discount is more than generous, until you want to buy electric items. The policy has recently changed to include a larger discount for one item a month, but in general, one gets 10% (basically sales tax) off on electrics.

Cons

At this time, one isn't allowed to work more than 25 hours each week. Reaching this number is RARE. On the last schedule, just about everyone (outside of management) had only 15 hours for the week. A ruckus was recently kicked up when an employee asked for a co-worker's phone number to ask her to switch shifts. Apparently, it's no longer allowed for the management to give out employee phone numbers; even to other employees! In past times, the weekly schedule was emailed to employees when it was finalized. Not anymore. The company claimed that an employee reading this information at home was considered "work" and they couldn't pay people to do this "work" outside of regular shifts. Huh? Now, people are required to come to the store to get their schedule. Can we get paid for that? What about the gas? The lack of employee parking leaves few options for employees. Either we have to pay ($7/day) to park in a city garage, park at meters, hoping not to overstay our dime, or search for parking in the surrounding neighborhoods, roughly a 15-20 minute walk from the store.
