Pros

The employee discount program is good.

Cons

There's no incentive for any one to stay. There's no recognition of aptitude and hard work. The whole mangement structure is based on the "Peter Principle", which leads to mediocrity. Consequently, there is a revolving door for anyone with brains or skills; unwanted traits at Sur la Table. Then to add insult to injury the revolving door "whacks" you as you're squeezed out.

Pros

Discount was fair and good opportunities to earn/win high quality cookware and kinves. Great customers by and large. In he store where I worked colleagues were very supportive and everyone shared expertise. Apparently that is not a universal dynamic in the chain.

Cons

incredibly aloof and distant corporate management that seemed to have no idea what went on in stores on daily basis. No appreciation for good performance; no ability to provide senior management with feedback on stupid products, or store operations. Very retaliatory atmosphere from senior management. Constant criticisms from district manager.

Pros

The employee discount was nice.

Cons

Horrible executive "leadership" (though they don't know how to lead, which is the problem) Store managers are under such pressure to make numbers and focus on schizophrenic directives from upper management, that the employees are mistreated. Good managers can't last long. There is an environment of fear everywhere. If you don't make your numbers, you get fired. If you make your numbers but don't do it their "way", you get fired. Managers and supervisors were expected to be "yes" people, not creative go-getters. Inexperienced, terrible managers only ones willing to attempt to run stores. Terrible pay. Training for new people - non-existent Ongoing training for current products - awful Customer service and staff abilities - awful In our store the facility itself was awful. A/C broke every year with in store temps reaching over 100 degrees often. Heating unit broke down every winter. The building leaks every time it rains.
