Management does it all

Pros

It's a friendly place with great products, nice stores and you do get an employee discount. Sur La Table is a super brand with a lot of potential.

Cons

You work for your boss and whoever their boss is and whoever their boss is. You do not work with anyone, you are the work you are assigned to do. Hierarchy totally rules. If you aren't in charge you better be good at taking orders. Please do not think on your own, management will do all that. You'll work too much and you won't accomplish anything because management hasn't figured out what they want. Do not come up with an idea, management has so many of those already. Communication is really bad, no one knows what to do until the last minute. It'll change again so you better be ready to run around like crazy and crash into lots of things. It's a mess.

Pros

If you love food and people this maybe the store for you! Most of the sales staff is super friendly and genuinely good people.

Cons

Management is HORRIBLE. They dont try to hide it either. You want good hours? You better get friendly with the scheduling manager who continously has these bi-polar episodes and talks to you like a child in front of anyone. You turn down one of their request when they ask you to work a day you're not scheduled? Be prepared for an attitude on your next shift and possibly hours getting cut. Favoritism is at an all time high in the store i work in (hells kitchen 57th street) dont expect to get far in there if you aren't kissing up to the right people. One previous manager whos no longer with the company even told me that the store manager told him "sorry you wont get promoted unless you're gay" Hiring, its extremely easy to get a job here. You just have to look good and put on a show about how much you love the store. I once saw a resume that read " Hire him, he has an accent =) " Although I love the team members I currently work with, and the culinary team. The store needs a strong pick me up in management. We are all adults and im tired of seeing employees ripped off hours or spoken down upon because management cant control their personal issues. Hope this helps.

Good People - Disorganized Mess

Pros

Discount, good people, good products

Cons

Micromanaging to the extreme. You're hired to do a job then aren't trusted to execute. If you are new to the workforce and need someone to tell you what and how to do something 24/7 then work here. If you have a brain go somewhere else. Also, HR is a negative mess.
