Pros

Great benefits, and salary, and some of the positions are interesting, and campus is beautiful.

Cons

Most of the places are full of arrogant and unfriendly people, especially the School of Medicine. I don't know what the environment is like in other places on campus, but almost everywhere I go, and every department that I have worked, is full of unhappy, unfriendly and arrogant people. They don't smile or say hi to you when walking down the hall, and many of the management, and faculty, play political games and treat their employee's with disrespect. I'm greatful for my many years of employment here, and as I said you can barely beat the benefits, and salary, however I would rather earn a little less for a friendlier, respectful environment.

Is Stanford Still Non-Profit?

Pros

Decent benefits program; especially tuition refund for children of employees.

Cons

Highly bureaucratic structure with poor managerial team. Stanford is a non-profit institution whose primary product is education. There is an effort to convert institution into a "for-profit" model supposedly for efficiency. In the process, it is losing creativity, intellectual vitality, and most importantly, it's sense of humanity. Chasing the political winds, using punitive rather than motivation incentives, and overly focusing on monetary goals are making the institution less prestigious. It is also ruining the academic culture of exchange and instilling a climate of fear instead. Founder Mrs. Stanford would be aghast and not recognize her own intentions given how the institution has evolved.
