Pros

The bulk of the employees are great people.

Cons

Much of the Medical Center Development (MCD) management makes employees feel as if they should be honored to work at Stanford. There is an air of elitism, especially around the concept that they are fundraising for the good of the people. Even though they are underpaid and worked under unreal expectations, there seems to be disbelief that employees are leaving for other opportunities. The toxic environment of MCD inevitably leads to high turnover.

Pros

It's a lovely campus, like working in a park, and the faculty are great to work with. The benefits are very good. Negotiate the best salary you can, as annual increases are low. The way to make a good salary at Stanford is to job jump, or market the Stanford name on your resume.

Cons

Once hired, bad managers don't get fired. I've had two managers, one with real anger management issues and the other some employees believe has some form of Asperger's. HR is well aware of these problems via info from departing employees, but does nothing. It's not an uncommon problem at Stanford. If you have a good manager, Stanford is a great place to work. If you don't, you just need to leave because the situation won't change.

Pros

There are ton of resources to help you and a ton of classes and training available.

Cons

Competitive nature of the environment at Stanford promotes sociopathic, abusive, and exploitative behavior by some faculty. Definitely not every faculty is like this, only a select few. But I am unlucky enough to be with one of these abusive faculty members. While administration is sympathetic, there is very little real protection for abused postdocs, and very little to no consequences for abusive faculty, so the abusive behavior continues unchecked.
