Great company; nightmare project.

Pros

Skanska is perhaps the most progressive and forward-thinking company within the CM/GC space. Globally they offer many benefits and programs which are unfortunately rare in the industry, such as employee ownership, great training, and inter-office exchange programs. The Portland office has accessible management, a great staff, and a variety of projects throughout the community. Skanska is also the most committed to worker safety in the industry.

Cons

The Portland office generally performs well and supports its employees, but the largest project supporting semiconductor R&D operations in Hillsboro does not. This project operates on an island from other Skanska Portland projects, limiting access to the programs that make Skanska great. The client demands are not buffered by executive management, leading to burnout and a constant overtime expectation among the staff with no options to rotate out to projects away from this client. Most of the processes in use at this project are unique to this client, which further silos the project staff. Unless you specifically enjoy working long hours in semiconductor manufacturing under constant deadline sprints with a complicated matrix of vaguely defined success metrics, do not work for the semiconductor client in Hillsboro. Any other Skanska project is excellent.

Pros

Been here 5 years and have a proven myself as a leader

Cons

Upper management does not value people below them, not transparent, no mentoring, no training, no team building. They talk of work life balance but really don’t believe in it. Don’t hire enough people to get a good flow in a project.

Pros

Once you're in, you're in.

Cons

People are rarely fired, even if they are bad for the company. It makes those of us who give a damn hate our jobs
