Pros

Overall, if you work for a good store with a great Store Director, you'll probably stick it out and enjoy your time. You typically have a great team of people to work with, although clique-y at times (Store depending). You get a lot of free makeup, skincare and fragrance. If you're a starting makeup artist, it is recommended as you learn how to work with all skin types, tones, textures, face and eye shapes, and a whole whack of personalities.

Cons

If you are an advanced makeup artist with more than a few years of experience, and you want to advance yourself, this is probably not the place for you. To become an elevated cast member, senior artist, lead, or specialist, you definitely have to drink the cool aid and lose your own personality, to mold to a set of criteria which it Sephora approved. Amazing skill set? Tenured makeup artist? Refuse to force people to buy stuff they don't need? You won't be selected as a Senior Artist, as its about sales. My Store Director was verbally and emotionally abusive to her cast members, which made the experience awful. On top of that, you are constantly told you get so much $$ worth of makeup for free to compensate for low wages but I soon found out my landlord doesn't accept Bare Minerals powder as rent. Favourtism is rampant, and although I never had a problem, I have seen people who had been so poorly treated and given horrible schedules, as well as constant sarcastic and backhanded commentary...unbelievable. This is not the picture of every Sephora, mind you, but many.

Pros

Above average bonus structure for retail. Industry leader in innovative marketing and store operations and presentations. Highly competitive environment keeps everyone driving the business.

Cons

Managers are too busy to manage and develop team. Workloads are not evenly distributed amongst team members. Promotions are inconsistently rewarded. Largely based on favoritism. Manager actually told me she didn't believe an individual was qualified for the promotion the employee received. General response to employee concerns are "do what you need to do to get the job done." People regularly work 6 days a week in order to complete tasks. Everyone is stressed. Never worked for a company where people are regularly pushed out or leave from poor treatment. Friends that still work there say it is business as usual. Company's reputation of challenging work environment is very true.

The Good, the bad, and the ugly

Pros

The thing. that I most enjoy about working at Sephora where the people. Everyone shared a common consensus, and there was rarely any disputes. I got along with mostly everyone and rarely had issues amongst ourselves. Also what I loved most, not sure if it was just for particularly me but it always seemed as if they really pushed for you to succeed. Although the discount was only 20% the added incentive to learn about new brands and products with gratis and being able to sample anything in the store was more than enough. Also certain brands at times would haveA window of time where they would give an additional 10% 20 or 30% discount along with your already employee discount.

Cons

Things that I didn't enjoy so much was favoritism amongst management, but I feel like that goes along with most job roles. Also the ugly is it's your store manager did not like you you might as well quit.
