Pros

See the world. Make friends from all over the world. Management perks. Single cabin. Epic crew parties. A challenging position that allows you to be creative and improve your management skills. Plenty of room for advancement. This can be some of the most rewarding work of your life but you have to make it that way. You have to earn your place on the ship with your fellow crew. New hires in any position on the ship are not given trust nor respect, they must earn it. And that takes time.

Cons

You work 10 hours minimum every single day of your contract (contract starts at 4 months for this position but you can be extended). Expect to work 12-16 hours on the first and last day of the cruise. The job can be extremely stressful. It's very easy to get fired from this job. Constantly under pressure to achieve revenue, guest satisfaction ratings, and ship sanitation standards. New hires are not always treated kindly. There can be a lot of anti-American sentiment from your fellow crew members that you have to deal with on a constant basis.

Pros

Travel, you get to work with people from all over the world, tax free salary. They do take safety seriously.

Cons

Too much stress from shoreside management who create systems that though on paper sound great, in practice they are time consuming and frustrating. Some of the policies they create anger the guests who then take it out on the staff. The create policies they expect you to impose, but when a guest complains, they throw you under the bus, leaving you to take the downfall. Something in the food is bad, perhaps they use saturated fats or trans fats - during my health checks, it was noted that my cholesterol levels had doubled. Due to stress my overall health was affected. It was recommended to head office, several times by visiting management, that I be transferred to another ship because the relationship between myself and my immediate supervisor was not a healthy one (she undermined me in front of the team, was unsupportive). However, they ignored this. I learnt that my head of department did not want me to be transferred and as they had so much clout with shoreside, I got stuck with a horrible supervisor, whom shoreside also knew was not a good boss. Yet they did nothing to change this, in the form of accountability. You work 7 days a week with no day off for months on end, depending on your position this could be from 4-6 months. Poor HR management policy and methods.

Pros

Benefits are good and most co-workers are helpful and accountable.

Cons

Over the last year, Executive Management shows loyalty to the shareholders, but not the employees. Morale is very low!
