Pros

Good people to work with. They were very knowledgeable and were willing to help if asked.

Cons

Management was very poor for the service department. Was told one thing about scheduling and pay upon being hired then received something completely different. No real training period, basically thrown to the wolves in hopes that you would learn. Never received real instruction on how to use some of the machines in the shop.

Pros

Have good relationships with most co-workers and had the chance to learn quite a bit from Master Technicians and other techs, as well as from working with so many vehicles, and so many different vehicles and situations at that.

Cons

Not great pay. About minimum wage for GST's (about 7.50 with $6 flat-rate, which is about $3 per most jobs that GST's do...so you come out to about $8.50 per hour). Flate-rate techs (C techs aka Mechanics) make about $14 flate-rate which comes out to anywhere from $350 a week to maybe $500 or so if you're very very lucky. Management and service writers push jobs so they can get comission, so you're constantly rushed with these walk-in and appt jobs. If mistakes are made or customers complain etc. there's always finger pointing and patronzing BS from service writers or managers that often know little to nothing about auto repair work. The writers and managers that know a little can be worse, trying to come in the shop and play mechanic and tell you what you're doing wrong or give you crap if you make a mistake or don't get a job done unreasonably fast.....but if they break something or mess up they shirk it off or hide it and worst of all RIP OFF CUSTOMERS selling them things because THEY broke it....or cover for a friend by again SELLING THINGS THEY BROKE OR THINGS THE CUSTOMERS DON'T NEED. I've seen customers pay for ENGINES, BODY REPAIR, BRAKES ETC because an employee essentially DAMAGED parts on the car that would've only needed maybe a $200 in repair for what it came in for. NO ADVANCEMENT comes from working at Pep Boys. Typical corporate failure with the CEO and administration having no place in the Automotive Repair field. Should stick to Parts, Accessories and Aftermarket merchandise retail.

Pros

At the location I worked at most employees were like family to each other. Generally the morale and attitude in the store was upbeat and happy, with plenty of joking around while maintaining a professional environment.

Cons

Salary and pay are poor. While minimum wage was $8.05 per hour for hourly employees: -Customer Service Associates started out at about $7.00 per hour plus 1% commission on any sales of retail or hard parts and 2% on all labor/parts done in the shop under their numbers. The majority of CSAs were full time, but a smaller number were employed compared to other stores that kept them at part-time. -Sales Support Associates started at $8.05 per hour and were generally part-time employees with 27 hours a week at most, with no commission under any circumstances. -Commercial Delivery Drivers started at $8.05 per hour, no commission available, 27 hours per week maximum. -Not much chance to advance in the company, or even in the store, raises are supposed to happen once a year, but sometimes don't if the employee were part-time and made minimum wage, unless minimum wage went up. -At the location I worked at, scheduling was worked around the employee's life/circumstances within reason in the Commercial department and sometimes in service, but rarely in Sales Support and Customer Service without notice weeks in advance and, if applicable, with a doctor's note, but even then still not always accepted and allowed. -Senior Management, I.E. Corporate, did not seem to appreciate employees for their work, nor reward them as such. Even if the store was the highest profitable in the area, they always demanded more without offering incentives or showing much, if any, appreciation. -At the location I worked at, while in 3 separate positions and departments within the same store, during the course of the year I was employed, 19 different employees left the store and company altogether. 3 were fired, 8 gave 2 weeks notice, and 8 quit without notice, with several "rage-quitting". Very few completed their last 2-weeks. In a store with an average of 20-25 employees, that level of turn over is abysmal. -Commercial Delivery Drivers used company vehicles, often brand new or like new, to make deliveries. The vehicles stayed at the store when not in use. If any damage occurred to the vehicles, the driver would be drug tested, but generally would not have to pay for repairs. If involved in an auto accident, whether at fault or not, that resulted in a worker's compensation claim, when a settlement is reached between the Worker's Comp. insurance company (Travelers Direct) and the employee/their attorney, the employee must tender their resignation as part of the settlement. Travelers Direct work comp insurance adjusters, like many in the field, are not on the employee's side and make things harder on the employee. They do not like to pay for lost wages, even when the injury is verified by multiple doctors.
