Pros

The best part of the job were the fun co-workers, most of whom are laid-back and have a sense of humor. But they were few and would often feel just as disheartened about the team's management. There were company perks like career classes, but management discouraged employees from using them because those activities took a 1-2 hours out of the normal workday. You can wear whatever you want to work.

Cons

Horrible work/like balance during the winter, often asking employees to drop plans at the last minute. Terrible regard and compensation towards lower-level employees, mid-to-high remain very clique-oriented. Managers who don't want to pay OT will shame you about your personal life, or for sick days. VPs are completely out of touch with team morale, and don't care if their team is miserable. Everyone is stressed out, just keeps their heads down and tries [often unsuccessfully] to leave at a decent hour. No acknowledgement/reward for all the long hours.

Lookout for the Layoff Cycle

Pros

MTV Networks and Viacom offer greta benefits, a generally laid back culture and work environment. Projects revolving around entertainment in the building and outside keep interest high and it's great resume eye candy.

Cons

Fear of layoffs and/or cutbacks and lack of legitimate advancement opportunities hinder many looking for long term career goals. Lack of transparency among management stokes a ridiculous rumor mill that cultivates the cyclical culture of fear. So much work gets done by recent college grads landing in Manhattan that the workday seems to be on a noon to 9p cycle. While some would laud the lack of a 9-5 culture, it often hinders commuters and those seeking family life.
