"People Come Last"

Pros

Absolutely none, unless you consider working at least 11-12 hours a day with no overtime pay, and average salary "pros".

Cons

Everything, specially the HR department that preaches about things they dont practice. Expect to hear fancy words like "we value work life balance" or "we encourage employee development" etc, then you go to a project work at least 6 to 6, forget about family or life, work Saturdays, and they give you no time to do anything in your life but work work work. The company's reputation for being short for "People Come Last" is very true, and has been proven many times. P.S. I worked for 3 fortune 500 global companies before, PCL is the smallest size employer I've ever worked for, so if anyone can judge such an overrated company like this, it's me.

PCL - where People Come Last

Pros

Increase in experience and knowledge

Cons

Don't expect working hard will be enough to get you deserved recognition unless you are one of the bosses favorites. Only those who spend time sucking up get anywhere. It's hard to get ahead when those in charge arent better managed by their managers. If you speak up you end up with a target on your back and eventually forced out.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. It’s disappointing to see that this is your perception of career advancement and recognition within our company. Please be assured that our goal is to foster performance and to reward all employees fairly for their contributions and results. We highly encourage you to discuss this with your district HRPD representative – they would be happy to address your concerns and to answer any questions you may have.

Pros

Having PCL on your resume when you go and look for another job

Cons

I worked for this company and left a long term government job to start with PCL. They are a tough company and don't pay very well, but they promised the moon, pay raises, advancement, etc, etc. They expect you to work 10+ hour days and constantly load you with heavy work loads. When it came time for a pay raise, they gave me a token amount which was a joke and the advancements never came, they just kept holding out the carrot for you to keep running after. The Christmas bonuses are a joke. Its often said PCL means "People Come Last" and I would definetely agree with that statement. They really don't care how they treat people since they are Canada's largest contractor, people will always want to work for them. After the second project I worked on came to a close I was laid off and I never looked back. Would I ever work there again? NO Am I bitter, absolutely not, PCL taught me many things which I still feel were excellent in my future career. I would just caution any person taking a job there to get the employment conditions in writing that were discussed in your interview. If they don`t provide it in writing, send them a letter outlining the discussions. They have no issues with blatant lying They talk a good game, but run away
