Not a career org but interesting place to be for a while

Pros

Conflict management mandate and expertise, multi-national workforce, interesting perspective on diplomacy and international relations

Cons

As it's not a careers organization the personnel can be a mixed bag-- bright young people starting out, experienced smart colleagues taking a mid-career jaunt but also washed up mediocrity parked and waiting to reach their 7 year max. As the mandate is broad the expertise can be a bit overstretched or superficial.

Pros

- powerful mandate, interesting fields of work, especially for those interested in human rights, politics, engineering (incl. hydro stations), environment; - good social package, excellent pension plan (much-much better than in UN), vacations for fixed-term staff; - atmosphere is much healthier than in UN, people are generally friendly to each other; - good possibilities for internal staff to move up a career ladder and/or to another locations.

Cons

- maximum of 7 years of one-location service, + 3 more years on another location for international and seconded staff (with some exceptions). However, this might be considered as biggest advantage, as people will give space for newcomers and 'fresh blood'; - a lot of 'dead-wood' local staff, especially in institutions, working for 15 and more years and not letting younger and modern-thinking people to come and shake up the work process; - AX Team as the special contractor supplies air tickets with absolutely crazy prices; - one would think that some seconded staff are taken just from the street to fill up the position, as there is lack of professionalism, education and experience, no respect to work and local staff.

Pros

Professional, open, good salaries and packages included, a place and people to learn from.

Cons

Sometimes too strict, in some countries do not pay for local employees' state benefits (pension fund/social security)
