Activity, but no mission

Pros

- Great place to discover and develop skills. - Easy to distance oneself from crises by focusing on your "research." - Security in pay and benefits. - Great place to develop basic skills ("basic" for advanced technology development), then springboard to a more productive career some place else.

Cons

- No mission means a petty, personal service culture has developed and can get out of control. - Leaders are "technical leaders" and are extremely limited in their ability to lead people and teams. - SESers are "shoulder shruggers" who more often than not, fail to deliver for their people. - Favoritism abounds.

Pros

Steady pay, good overall benefits, friendly people and laid-back atmosphere. For the most part, you'll never work more than 40 hours in a week. Great work-life balance.

Cons

The bureaucracy you find in working for government organizations is quite omnipresent. If you want to enjoy the comfort of working for a big company, this place is for you. If you're an out-of-the-box thinker, you might find it frustrating to work here. A lot of things come down to politics, which is something you'll have to get used to. The education reimbursement programs - which were once very good and among the best in the country - have completely diminished. At Kennedy Space Center, the food is absolutely terrible. When I last worked there, there were 3 Subway restaurants on center, with very few other options. Since Kennedy Space Center is fairly remote, off-campus options are quite far and would take 15-20 minutes to get to.

Pros

It's NASA. People think you do something cool and must be super smart to work there.

Cons

Contractors are 3rd class citizens. There is a mountain of red tape to get ANYTHING done. Buildings are old and ugly. No central air conditioning. No freebies. Expensive food that is horrible. NASA police likes to give tickets for every little thing.
