Pros

I guess it's better than working fast food, and the job is relatively simple enough that an illiterate can get by for many years working there.

Cons

-When I was first hired I was making 7.15. Every year Modell's gives an annual raise of 15 cents. Each time min. wage went up I was working almost to the same exact pay as a new person that I would even help train. It then got ridiculous to the fact that when earlier this year(2014) min. wage went up to 8.25. I was now getting equal pay as everybody else. Do you realize how humiliating that is to work at a place for 5+ years and get nothing for it?! -Forget about raises if you're a hard worker that's not happening at this place even if a manager recommends it to upper management. Modells just is very cheap! There is no growth opportunities unless you wanna work 40hrs making 10 bucks an hour as a department manager. If so, go ahead and slave away. -Their expectations for themselves are hilarious. Opening on Thanksgiving Day thinking they can compete with retail heavy hitters like Walmart, and Target. - No commission for sales although they sure do want you to have that salesman mentality. - This job for many high school/colledge students is a part time job looking to make some extra cash while they study. How any manager could pressure, and expect some sort of full time commitment is insulting especially considering the above mentioned frustrations with recognition, and pay. I'm not saying all the managers I had throughout the years were like this as most did understand, and respect my studies. I was even encouraged by a great manager to continue my studies and not make retail my life. That doesn't discourage that a standard of work rate should be satisfied, but that's up to management to set that standard. Other managers want to load me with close to 40hrs, and add much unneeded stress to my life. -In the summertime having to stand out in 90 degree weather for sidewalk sales. How inhumane! -Garbage union that won't protect you, and only will take money from your check every week. Union dues have consistently gone up, and you can't opt out of being in the union. - Oh yeah! and the Mos Cheer while for one is just plain stupid, it's also a violation of one of Modell's core values which is "I" for Integrity. It's a lie that in Modell's mind associates are number one as the cheer states.

Pros

Decent Employee Discounts, 33 1/3% Coupons yearly, Some great associates

Cons

* The pay is not competitive and is very low for the amount of work and tasks assigned * Claims hours are Flexible but they are NOT Flexible * Minimal hours and short shifts for associates * A General Manager and two Assistant Mangers = Too Many Chiefs and not enough Indians * Unprofessional Management, who hold grudges, have cliques and show favoritism * Nobody wants to work for a living and always pass the work off to other people * The company claims to have an open door policy but nobody wants to be bothered * You will be punished for bringing up or complaining about management not doing things correctly or working at all. * Its all about who you know in the company, up to and including the home office. * Payroll department is very rude and irate whenever you have to deal with them. * Company is not particularly interested in employee retention * Write ups are generic punishments instead of tools to improve performance. * Company is an avid supporter of "paper trails" if you aren't liked or don't get along with the boss they will find little things to write you up for. Essentially leaving a paper trail to later fire you for misconduct. * Training is basic and lackluster, if you don't push for and seek out your own training you will not get it. You WILL however be written up for not knowing something 100%. * Transfers will not be given if you have issues, complaints, or concerns with other management. *You are not allowed to call, or use witness to defend yourself for pretty much anything that will help your case. *If you are let go, your insurance is canceled the Friday that you leave. Good luck getting all of your medical stuff taken care of. * The pay is generally minimum wage for new hires and an extra dollar for department managers. Which is funny because the CEO has authorized, the management to buy many books for his friends that the company reimburses them for. You can make minimum wage but he will cover 10k for a book for a friend. * Job pay is a wide range for assistant management some as little as 33k and others closer to 45k * Nobody will help you do anything in this company. * The consensus seems to CYOA (Cover Your Own @$$) First and then worry about the customers and staff. * Double Standards do apply * Management will check / Stalk your Facebook / Social Media if you are being interviewed (Its not illegal in NJ yet) * Ive spoken to management, truck drivers, department managers, associates, office personnel and everyone seems to genuinely dislike the job and only stick around to pay the bills *Turnover rates are astronomical *Lots of very cheap product *Sporting goods sections are a joke, and very little variety * It should be Modells Apparel shop not Modells Sporting Goods *** You can take my review with a grain of salt, you will only know if you experience it for yourselves. I have managed numerous companies in my years of retail management and Modell's Sporting Goods has to be one of the most poorly lead companies i have experienced. I feel like i have wasted a year of my life and would urge anyone who is considering a career here to look elsewhere.

Pros

consistent hours, always able to pick up extra hours, a lot of incentives to potentially make extra money. Push sales.

Cons

You never get out on time, always short staff, they hire you to one specific location and then you're covering the whole store, throw you on the registers without proper training and blame you for mistakes. They try to push tablet and credit card sales too much. Horrible management very unprofessional.
