Pros

As just out of school, you can learn almost everything you need as a professional software engineer. Co-workers are super friendly and engaged. My supervisor is quite nice. You have a great freedom to implement the project. Excellent gym and great classes.

Cons

The direction of product is vague. The skills for higher level engineer are mediocore. Good performer will leave soon after got green card or better offer.

Pros

Next to mall so many eating options

Cons

Do not know where to start. The list is extremely long. Will highlight just a few. - If u planning to join the technology department, absolutely do not join! The head of the department is a CTO who has zero technical knowledge and is very hard to have a conversation with. When he speaks in town halls, everyone usually finds it a good time to take a nap. - Not just the CTO, all VPs reporting to the CTO are also non technical. If that was not enough, u wll not be reporting to an engineering manager but a product owner i.e. another non-technical person. The hierarchy is absolutely crazy. Just imagine as a software engineer, your bonus, promotion etc. depends on hierarchy of product owners, VPs, CTO that do not understnd a single line of code. They will still go ahead and give you a rating based on how they like you. U have to have a brown nose to get any bonus or promtion i.e. u have to lose all ur self respect. - Everyone you talk to is unhappy and is usually are staying at this company because they are either visa dependent or family reasons. That is it. No single employee in technology really wants to be here. This place really has the worst culture I have ever seen. - Above all, quality of release product is so so bad that as a software engineer, I do not want to mention outside that I was part of any product releases here.

Our CTO and Technology leadership team are very involved and engaged in the day-to-day management of the teams and the product release cycles. The leadership team meets regularly to understand the release status, which includes reviewing our quality index and scorecard. This information is available to everyone in the company, creating visibility on improvements release-over-release and aligned with our value of Transparency. As we started 2019, we have held three Technology Kick-Off and Training events across our major engineering sites (Washington D.C., Hangzhou China, and Warsaw Poland). We trained over 700 technical professionals, (including managers) on what it means to be a MicroStrategist. Multiple subject areas were covered over the three-day event, including ‘people’ related topics such as goal setting and effective performance management, career pathing and giving feedback. From what I saw and have heard in follow up, our employees were engaged, appreciative, and have expressed a desire to have this training on an annual basis. Our leaders have a diverse range of experience and skills, including those with software engineering backgrounds. We take career development and advancement seriously and spend a significant amount of time considering technical professional’s promotion readiness. During the past year, we have promoted 145 Technologists across our three sites. Our people are the heart and soul of the company, and we want to hear from them - and I appreciate this review from you. We have an open-door policy, where employees can raise concerns to any one of our leaders, including the CTO. Anyone can also come to me or anyone on my team. We recently deployed Workday and have identified functional and matrix managers for our Technology employees. Our leadership structure is one that relies on the collaboration between Product and Engineering mindsets and I do believe Workday is going to help employees better understand who their "transversal" or engineering manager is and help us work through some of the issues I have heard in the past about how the product and engineering mindsets work together.

Pros

- People were good co-workers. No bro-grammers - Depending on the team, good work life balance. Many strict 9-5ers who have young children. - In building gym with quality free fitness classes (they turn off the AC after 6 p.m. so don't work out late in the summer!) - Fantastic new lounge

Cons

- No investment in software engineers to keep their skills current. - Management is a mess - Salaries are kept low for everybody because the software engineers who rely on the company to eventually get a green card (of which there are many) are incredibly underpaid for their experience level. Bad raises.

Thanks for the review. I want to note that we currently have an opening for a Training resource in our Technology department. The role of that resource is to focus on the ongoing development of our Tech employees as I would agree, we have traditionally not done enough to keep skills current and help people progress in their careers. This year, we are seeing some change even without that position. Our Tech team is just wrapping up a month that has featured three "Technology Kick Off Events" and as we bring on more resources to focus on talent development in technology, I expect our career and manager development programs will significantly improve.
