Abysmal Culture

Pros

Within Medallia, there is a handful of truly incredible leaders. The company's market outlook is also positive despite continuous budget cuts.

Cons

Unfortunately, having a few great people does not equate to having a good company culture. Working at Medallia is like being in high school; you get ahead by befriending others. Camaraderite, not meritocracy, rules. Additionally, something worth noting is that Medallia takes special care to only ask certain employees to give feedback on Glassdoor. It's something you may want to keep in mind as you read through reviews.

As someone who liked high school but never wanted to repeat it, your analogy hurt! I'm sorry you've experienced Medallia's culture as sophomoric. We do share a lot of camaraderie, but it’s not why people get promoted. I do believe that camaraderie and meritocracy can peacefully exist -- there's no tradeoff. As for budget cuts, we've never actually had them. Every year we re-evaluate our priorities and choose to invest more in some areas, less in others, but that’s just budgeting - not budget cutting. As our CFO likes to say, we have limitless funds to invest, but not a dollar to waste. We also never, ever solicit Glassdoor feedback from certain employees and not others. I'd personally prefer it if people just brought up their issues - positive and negative -- internally at fireside chats, in 1:1s with managers, or through our internal surveys. That said, I know that not everyone is comfortable doing so. Lastly, I couldn't agree more that everyone needs to be held accountable for clear outcomes and success metrics. If you don't have clarity about what success in your role looks like, and you can't resolve it with your manager, please reach out to your department head, People and Culture, or me. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. If you'd like to talk more, please e-mail me or stop by my office.

Pros

- The product works, and makes a significant impact in the way our customers operate their businesses - Insane 98% renewal rate and extremely high client NPS scores make the career fulfilling - Rapid growth creates opportunities to take on leadership roles and opportunities are based on merit - Awesome people, committed to enabling our customers to be succesful

Cons

- As we have grown, it is harder to know everyones name - Remote offices, while significantly improving, still don't have the awesome feel of being in Palo Alto

Reviews like yours are always a pleasure to read. You nailed it on our product: it does have a huge positive impact on the way companies operate. I am glad you find the impact so fulfilling. It is a pleasure to work with people who are so personally invested in what they do. Man, are you right about it getting harder to know everyone's name. One of my biggest frustrations is when someone says "Hi, Amy" in the kitchen and I can only respond with a "Hi" because I don't know the person's name. Once upon a time, I not only knew everyone's names, but also the names of their family members, their hometowns, etc. -- I knew them. If you have any suggestions on how to ameliorate this situation, I'd love to hear them. I am sorry you still don't think the remote offices have the awesome feel of Palo Alto. I am not sure I agree -- I was in the new London office last month and it was great. If you're there, check out the baby grand piano and the theme of the conference rooms (hint: one is "the Pub"). When I am in New York next month, I will visit the office and will see if I agree with you in that location. Thanks for alerting me. -Amy

Pros

Medallians are wonderful, intelligent, and diversely-experienced individuals. Generally speaking, they truly care about the mission of the organization, and go "all in" to add value.

Cons

Leadership bench strength, ineffective communication, and a lack of willingness to give full autonomy and allow individuals to operate as owners.

Thank you for your feedback. I loved your description of the people who work here – wonderful, intelligent, from a variety of backgrounds, who are "all in." I agree with some of the "cons" you mentioned. First, though we have talented leaders throughout the organization, our hyper growth has at times outstripped our ability to plug holes in the bench. Second, in terms communication not being as effective as necessary, I plead guilty as charged - fortunately, we are creating a strong internal communication strategy, which is top of my list for 2016. I'm puzzled by some of the other cons. I am not entirely sure what you mean by lack of autonomy. Are you willing to follow up with more specifics? Same thing with ego – it’s not a word I hear associated with our culture very often, and I'd love to learn more about what you mean. As you know, we have a "no jerks" policy that we work hard to enforce through our thorough interview process, 360 reviews, and a general feedback culture. I would love to better understand the "toxic" people to whom you're referring. I know constructive feedback, especially around people's behavior, is the hardest kind to give, but it's also integral to helping them grow. If you are willing to share more, please reach out. -Amy
