Pros

A stable work environment and excellent employee benefits. The intellectual stimulation of being involved in important academic research. The benefits included tuition reimbursement for up to $5000 a year. The management was open and agreeable with feedback, and the office often ran smoothly in terms of work flow. They were just getting into more web development when I was there, so there could have been new opportunities in that area. Additionally, the flexible hours were ideal for someone who takes extension school courses in the evenings, or pursues freelance opportunities on the side. Reasonable life/work balance, to be sure with this job.

Cons

The work could be boring at times, and the office environment was too quiet. It almost felt like there was nobody there during the days. The offices were very isolated, and that almost led to a lack of communication and idea flow, which certainly would have been useful in several situations. There was some potential for professional growth, but it took a long time for people to leave positions and thus there were few opportunities for promotions. In that regard, the stability was also a downside. A little more employee morale would have been good, and it seemed people stayed in their positions too long

Pros

the pool of the students, the seminar speakers and researchers who visit on a regularly basis can be a foster for new ideas. At other institutions one may not get such close contact. The faculty members are also leaders in their fields.

Cons

some labs can be competitive

Pros

It's an exciting environment, and you get to do something fun. It's hard to write a true review for MIT since it depends on the office your in, but I can't imagine any office which wouldn't support freedom of thought. The location is also quite good being right at the edge of Boston. Many shows which travel to the East coast make it to the Boston area. The MIT Student Center also has a great arcade with some of the most popular games. It makes it possible to stay there even when not working, just for fun. All the people are really nice as well.

Cons

There's lots of variance. Some departments have free food and drinks, while others just coffee and tea. The area around MIT isn't the best. Kendall square has a few okay places but for the most part it's an industrial complex. The lunches aren't horrible but there are probably better places around. MIT itself is also a confusing place. It will probably take a while to get acquainted with the layout. For one, all the buildings are numbered which means if you like names, you're going to be out of luck. Furthermore, the numbers aren't consecutive, so that might be tricky as well. There's a system but it's not immediately obvious.
