Pros

I spent 2 years as a graduate research assistant at MIT. The work is cutting edge and there are really smart people everywhere. The facilities are typically good and funding is good.

Cons

There is always LOTS of work to do. For me, there was very little guidance from my advisor/boss so it was a bit difficult at times to figure out what the top research priorities were.

Pros

It has awesome name recognition. Just saying that you work for MIT makes people look at you differently. As a grad student, your schedule is also very flexible (for the most part).

Cons

It really depends on your adviser. Some advisers are really demanding and others aren't. Some look over your shoulder about everything and want to show you how to do every step. Others want to see you once a month and that's it. There are also those in between. Each style can be good if that is the way you work best. Choose wisely. It can mean the difference between bliss and misery.
