Pros

Staff discount and the products.

Cons

There no other way but to say that it was a toxic work environment. Perhaps it was the store location I was in because I've heard positive reviews from friends that have worked in other stores outside of NYC. There was too much passive aggressiveness, entitlement, and unnecessary attitude all of which are forms of mental abuse and that's not an exaggeration. It was extremely cliquey and I felt like I was in middle school all over again. Lush presents itself as a positive place for self-care however the store I was in was beyond hypocritical. Floor leaders would talk to me as if I was the stupidest person on earth and I felt extremely heavy coming into work for every shift. It's sad because I know Lush at the core as a company does not believe in that atmosphere. I know co-workers who were even too scared to approach the manager and other floor leaders about their approach.

Great principles, some horrible management at the store level

Pros

Amazing customer service experience/training that you'll carry with you through your career. Pays 20p over the adult minimum wage, even if you're younger than that. 50% staff discount. They try to be a fun place to work. AMAZING company ethos (just doesn't always filter down). Fantastic opportunities for personal development IF your manager is one of the nice ones. (The smaller stores are the nicest to work for.) The lower level staff who work there are lovely people.

Cons

Highly target driven. Must be with a customer at all times or management are unhappy with your performance (even if there's only one customer in the shop and they want to be left alone). On your feet all day. You are never enthusiastic enough. Your jaw hurts from fake smiling so much. Highly variable environment between different stores - some amazing, others are managed by narcissistic micro-managers with nothing but criticism and condescension. Supervisors and trainee managers are not paid appropriately. Often asked to stay late. If you're working a store close, you will not leave at the time you're meant to according to the rota. You will often not be paid for staying late. In large stores, breaks are unreliable/poorly scheduled/you're often pressured to cut yours short, and they are never long enough. Hectic 12 hour shift during Christmas period = 1 hour break. You would rather go to work with severe food poisoning than deal with the repercussions of taking a day off sick. Highly disorganised - regularly given shifts on the day before the week they were for.

Pros

The discount is great, and people are generally fun to work with. You get to be involved with local charity events, if you choose, and it's actually really fulfilling to help someone who has always been unhappy with their skin find things that work for them.

Cons

High expectations for output with very low pay. They expect employees to be a walking encyclopedia of Lush knowledge and pay them minimum wage, where a similar job pays twice as much. Most of the girls here are almost Disney-level brainwashed and, while knowing their skills are being taken advantage of, put up with it because they really believe they're "saving the planet." They'll stick around for YEARS before ever being offered an opportunity to advance or get a pay raise, and because it's mostly ladies, no matter how nice, they do get catty. Management in the shops is a one-sided check-and-balanceless joke, and I heard so many stories of the founder sleeping around with managers during the week-long meetings in the UK. Gross. I really wanted to love this job and was disappointed when I saw how screwed up it is.
