Pros

They'll hire you with little to no experience

Cons

Customer satisfaction and customer service are things they claim are a priority to them, but all I ever hear about is pushing the Shop Your Way Rewards cards. The registers are very old and crash all the time. If you are a cashier like me, this can be very frustrating. Customers don't like to wait because the machine doesn't work. I also feel that there is no room for advancement in the company. I expressed interest in an area of the store, when a position opened up. They let me work there for a while until they hired 3 NEW people for the job.

So much wasted potential !

Pros

The flexibility of scheduling is perhaps the best aspect of KMart; they've worked with me for more than four years accommodating my constantly shifting academic schedule with precious few problems. Before the wage freeze, raises were generally ok to excellent (at least for me). The product line has increased in quality since my arrival, and the majority of my fellow coworkers are hardworking, dedicated people.

Cons

Management is either apathetic, incompetent, overworked or a combination of the three, resulting in poor communication overall, to fellow managers or associates. Problems are rarely addressed quickly, and lackluster employees are not dealt with accordingly, barring theft, resulting in a thoroughly weak team. There is no attempt to retain talent. The recent culling of the Major Appliance employees (i.e. all of them) has left nobody knowledgeable to work within that department, which certainly has resulted in lost sales. Raises are nonexistent thanks to the continuing wage freeze -- yet the stores have money to purchase HDTVs for the softlines area which serve no discernible purpose, and makeovers for the break room (which nobody uses). As previously mentioned, cashiers are forced to shove SYWR rewards cards & credit cards (with atrociously high interest rates) down the throats of customers. If cashiers do not meet quota, their hours are cut down to next to nil. Archaic technology is also a concern. The lack of full time employees for each department has resulted in seriously mismanaged and poorly run departments.
