Pros

The HR team at Kmart was pretty accommodating for me around my schedule most of the time, especially considering it's a retail store. While the pay wasn't great, I also was making more than many friends were at fast food restaurants, and I didn't come home smelling like work.

Cons

Corporate management hog-ties store management, so all decisions are made by headquarters rather than managers on the "front lines". Newer, younger employees training is often inadequate, and therefore create a lot of slack for other hard-working employees to clean up, and management either doesn't realize it or does nothing to stop it. Company culture of management and associates is not as pro-customer as it should be (though better than Wal-Mart's culture this way). Customers pay for the products, and pay the paychecks indefinitely, and yet most employees still shrug them off like nuisances. Managers don't help this culture as much as they should. Little or no advancement opportunities available for those willing to work hard. No incentive to bust your butt, because at the end of the day your paycheck is the same size as someone else who sat on their butt the entire time while you're drenched in sweat from clearing pallets. Management does nothing.

Pros

Good Pay vs the competitors for this position... Blue Cross / Shield insurance is a plus. Work week varies so weekends off are about 1 time per month.

Cons

Kmart is like a dog with all bark and no bite. The company talks about competing with Target and Walmart, yet refuse to spend the labor necessary for customer care. As a manager at Kmart, you will find yourself carrying patio furniture out to customer's cars, covering associate breaks at the service desk, and searching for employees that are hiding in the corners of the building.

Pros

To learn how some companies are successful and others are still barely hanging on.

Cons

The upper managment is not in touch with the front line supervisors and managers that deal with daily issues to hit metic targets for departments, plant, and region. The company cares more about the associates than the management team. Management turnover is very high and the hours are long without the compensaton and recognition. The deals made with vendors in lieu of the bankruptcy filling crippled the organization which is stuck with product and hot loads with no visibility. Companies do not make appointments for scheduled delivery, there is no way of knowing what will be delivered daily until the truck is called in at the gate for live-loads and/or truck is backed into the dock that was dropped over night. The departments have their own agendas for success at the expense of competing departments and plant goals. Operations managers and department managers are sometimes not equipped to lead or manage their responsibilities. The company loses a lot of great talent by not backing their management team nor giving them the opportunity ot tools to be successful with the company. The company is not open to change or improvements and ostricizes management that does not fit in the ideal or thinking of the company. Long hours, extreme conditions, and poor communication are the cornerstones of the distribution center. The turnover in managerment extends from supervisors at the distribution center to the General manager at all levels of operation. All parties seem to be abandoning ship.
