Pros

Fun and interesting projects and tech. Good people in non-management positions. Benefits are OK.

Cons

Salary is lower than anywhere else. Raises don't happen. Engineers and other employees are kept in current positions and constantly told that they're "not at a level to advance yet" and will string you along for years. Bait and switch hiring tactics where they will downgrade a Sr position to non-sr and make excuses and promise you a promotion which never comes. They believe that their lack of pay is because they're the best around and it should be a privelage to work there. They also include bonuses as a lure, which are never guaranteed. They include ESPP as an incentive as well. Just beware that you'll do 3-5 people's jobs, including managing, quality engineer and project management for which you will never be recognized. They've hired in a ton of typical silicon valley middle management who are destroying the remnants of a good work culture.

Sad weird place ... especially in corporate

Pros

Amazing product innovation that has revolutionised the field of surgery. CEO is a nice, super smart leader. Seems to be rationale and strategic.

Cons

A great product doesn't mean you also have a great culture. Corporate is chaotic and a political nightmare. People get away with being outright nasty and demeaning to their direct reports. In fact, my toxic manager is the most passive aggressive person I've ever met. She has gone out of her way to not train me and set me up for failure. She spends our one-on-ones gossiping about how much she hates various VPs and how it's not really a "people first" company. She also constantly complains about her health and how the company has made her physically ill. Not very professional! Don't waste your time. Not a great place to work.

Pros

Robotic surgery is incredible, and it's not going away. I am a believer in our product, and I am a believer in the value da Vinci brings to patients. The company has developed a brilliant platform technology with a large line of instruments and accessories that drive the company's market growth...and competition has yet to appear.

Cons

Toxic environment at Sunnyvale headquarters. I am constantly disappointed by management. Managers who have been at the company 5+ years are protected by senior management, despite routine and numerous reports of abusive behavior to HR, and notoriously high turnover on certain teams. People at this company tend to feel like hamsters at the wheel - the company prides itself on running lean, but the result is that employees are worked to the bone and offered little opportunity to look strategically beyond the tasks of the day. Compensation at headquarters averages in the 60th percentile, despite the high cost of living in Silicon Valley. The company has been padding relatively low salaries with stock, but in 2013, stock prices have come crashing down. No 401k match. Holiday days are lean - beginning with 11 days a year. Little growth opportunity - other med device companies have rotation opportunities - there's none of that here. And if you move to another team, it may be done in such a way that you see no bump in pay. Keep your sanity and work/life balance - don't work here.
