Out of Touch Culture, Terrible COVID Response

Pros

Lots of smart people to work with. Good PTO to start. Big global company doing interesting work, chance to develop good relationships with your customers.

Cons

COVID policies in US offices are horrific and dangerous. Employees forced to go to offices even for roles that can easily work from home like admin, sales or finance. Company lies during lockdowns to say all employees are "essential" when only lab staff actually are. No changes made to make offices safer like barriers, air filters, fresh air flow... nothing, just cheap masks. Employees aren’t even told when coworkers in the same small spaces test positive. They claim to clean all surfaces, but this isnt even happening regularly. Everyone is forced into offices because US management "doesn't like" the idea of people working from home. That's it. No real reason for why Intertek is putting employees lives at risk and no intervention from HQ in London to keep people safe. Wont even make exceptions for people with high risk family members. Absolutely unethical and immoral. The COVID response is just the latest example of an old school, bullying culture that doesn’t value employees, expertise, retention, or ethics. Even after years of high turnover, terrible feedback, and embarrassing reviews, there is no effort to change. There’s no leadership, no communication of strategy or goals, no 360 feedback, no efforts in diversity, wellness, sustainability or other things you might expect in a modern workplace. The offices don’t even recycle paper or cans for gods sake. The drive for profitability takes priority over everything, but that’s still no excuse, because other countries run profitably with more forward thinking leaders and happier employees. But the US hasn’t had new ideas or leaders since the 1990s and they don’t think they need any. Only work here if you really need a job, but plan to leave after a year or two because there’s nowhere to go, no one to look up to, no raises or realistic commission plans, and no real potential for growth. On the bright side you’ll be recruited by competitors because the entire industry knows Intertek is only good for a “starter” job, and when you’re ready to grow in your career and be treated with respect you need to move on.

Pros

Nice office, pay not bad, free parking.

Cons

I worked for this company for about a year. I regret it for accepting their offer. If you hate micro management, do not ever accept a position there. I wasNOT an account manager but a salesman. My job was to keep pushing for sales. Managers were not supportive. Basically, I was on my own. Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, I had to be in a sales forecast in order to predict how much I will sell in addition to what I sold. Their goal was to keep increasing our quota on a weekly basis. I was so stressed out by the amount of pressures I had to deal with from the boss. I wore basically all hats from doing cold calling job to go out there meeting clients. I was using a system that was outdated, so poor in quality, very slow and not efficient. When I had trouble with the system, they had no tech support within to help, I had to call to India tech support team which was unknowledgeable with the tools. Typically 4 to 6 hours to try to fix something whereas I had other priorities which I could not meet because of bad computer system. I did not know how many account managers had used the same laptop over and over. Intertek had a high turnover employee rate. Engineers there hate their job and they were somewhat selfish. Because of the managers' sales tactics, customers are pushed away to the competition. Their price to certify a product is so expensive, you will never be able to compete with CSA and TUV. An account manager relies heavily on operation in the US to perform testing and help with quotes that makes the price even higher in USD fund. So think about it. It is impossible to convince customers to buy your services because of prices that are too high. So it was somewhat difficult for me to meet the quota. Even when I was able to meet my quota, they increased it at next sales' call. Are you looking for an account manager job? Do not apply at this company because you will be disappointed. If you do accept any position there, the most you will last is 6 months if you are lucky.

Pros

Relatively good standard benefits for full time employees. Will sponsor visa for internationals.

Cons

Very high turnover rate. Employee growth is not considered. Training is minimal. Everyone is overworked. Perpetually low CAPEX. Management is disconnected from regular workers. Upper management is only concerned about profit. HR is very ineffective.
