Impressive scale, requiring a strong cultural integration

Pros

Scale of the company makes it unique in the industry Maintaining an approach to leading the industry (rather than following) Changes are going to continue for some time so I'd expect people with strong business competancies to have oppotunities to change/evolve roles in the next years.

Cons

Legacy companies had very different cultures and integration program does not seem to be proactively engaging with necessary change management approach Over-the-top ambitions (the best in everything) not matched by resources Likelihood that further reorganisations/rescalings will be required in the coming years No visibility on compensation and benefits at the moment - likely to be lower for at least one side of the business.

Pros

Great work/life balance. Great training programs (at least prior to the merger). Ample travel opportunities. Opportunity to learn and contribute cross-functionally. Great people at the plants. Most plants have a close-knit family feel, at least among the local employees.

Cons

No opportunity for advancement if you are not willing to move. Most plants are in isolated locations. The benefits that were considered among the top of the industry (pension plus 401K, good health insurance) were drastically changed as a result of the merger. The merger was handled poorly with many in management not knowing whether they still had a job more than 6 months after the official merge date. The integration of the two companies has been a struggle. Management is not transparent about the future with respect to changes in position, changes in benefits, elimination of bonuses, changes to salaries and classification, severance eligibility, etc. The confusion and frustration caused a pervasive culture of negativity in plant management.

Merger Mayhem

Pros

There are currently no pros for working for Lafarge. If other jobs are available, you should take them.

Cons

Since 2012, the Company has drastically gone downhill with constant cost-cutting measures, benefits have been getting cut left and right. In 2015, Lafarge and Holcim merged to create LafargeHolcim. This have gone even further downhill since then. The merger has been incredibly mishandled, policies are still being figured out months after the mergers completion, and information has not been shared with employees. Morale is at an all time low
