Catastrophe Modeller

Pros

Opportunity to start working in the reinsurance sector. Possibility to develop skills (mostly via self-development for those who want to learn fast) in different fields: reinsurance treaties, market, actuaries, catastrophe modelling.

Cons

- In practice, data monkey. Few insight of the model, very dull and repetitive tasks. - Modelling is less glamorous than it sounds as it essentially means preparing data in excel, importing and exporting and often re-running analyses. - Opportunistic way of modelling to please brokers and clients. - Heavy workload and work hours. - Pressure from brokers can have a very negative impact on work. - Very few respect for people with no title. - Very low salaries for beginners and rare career opportunities for them.

Pros

Colleagues generally stick together. Some nice people. The pension scheme is really rather good. Good variety of experience can be gained. Not a lot else to say.

Cons

Management is awful. Have dealt with some disgustingly unprofessional people. Aon is way ahead in many areas and GC will never catch up. A lot of employees are of a low standard. Ambition is pointless at GC. Everyone is a clock-watcher. No good training. Pay is way below the market. Someone is always leaving - they cannot keep their employees. Unbelievable levels of corporate politics. Almost everyone in my team is looking for a new job!

Misshapen Organization

Pros

Others have complained about low pay but if you are talented you will get a nice increase on your way in. There are plenty of reasonable hard-working people in the company.

Cons

There are many. Someone else made this comment but it's not beneficial to be in any group other than broking. Some seriously brazen personalities who lack the ability to treat people with respect. The office environment could use a serious morale boost as well. Reporting increases in revenues and earnings without any appreciable change in culture or bonus potential doesn't help anyone. Finally, dead weight -- there is lots of it. Tons of folks near the top who seemingly do little of anything and plenty in the trenches who lead to huge fixed costs without a blip of productivity.
