Pros

Amazing culture of inclusivity, diversity and respect. Every company talks about it but Gap stands by it at all costs. Everyone in the field is genuinely so kind and cares so much about the brand. Districts Managers are all wonderful and are doing the best they can in a business that’s rapidly changing. Discount and benefits are excellent. If you honestly work hard for the company the company will work hard for you in terms of compensation, transfers, promotion etc. Payroll is not as bad everyone makes it out to be. If you’ve got the right people and lead by example you’ll be fine.

Cons

Operationally the place is... sort of a train wreck. The biggest problem is technology. On any given day you will have to navigate 3-4 different operating systems, every store is a revolving door of device replacements, there are about 15 different reports to look at at any given time to get a clear overview of the business all of which update on different days, registers losing track of cash, strange unexplained payroll reporting the list goes on and on with no clear resolutions. Product allocation is at times equally as hectic. What happened to that 3k units we were supposed to get on Thursday that turned into 14k? Why does maximum capacity exist if it’s blatantly ignored? Why are size runs always broken? Where’s the replenishment on top investments? No one knows! I have to say that individually everyone on every level is doing their best to fix these issues but collectively there seems to be large disconnects between the field, corporate and across most business functions. Customer acquisition (Credit/BRIGHT/e-mail capture) is no longer a compliment to the product and customer journey; the weight of these metrics make it seem as though it IS the product and ONLY journey. We spend more time talking about this than we ever do product and there is absolutely no incentive to care about anything else from the perspective of the associate. The company is regularly terminating people for falsification of records (creating fake applications/profiles) because of the insane pressure (think daily conference calls on top of bi-hourly emails about performance) to meet arbitrary acquisition goals just to keep hours on their schedule.

Pros

-work life balance. Usually get a handful of shifts from 1 shift to maybe 4 in the whole week, most shifts is usually 4-5 hours long (at least my location). Usually understanding for college students. -good for beginner retail. Although training did suck in actually helping me learn, most people in the job understand people can be new and help out until you get a handle on things. -good for younger people like teens and early 20’s. It wasn’t much of a pro for me even though I am young I prefer more mature co-workers, but as a teen looking for a first job I think that makes it a good pro. - good if you just want some extra cash or have a side job. Since you can’t expect shifts but only want some money for yourself or for holidays its helpful.

Cons

-pay rate sucks considering how little shifts. If you go strictly by shifts your given expect about $200 usually every two weeks. Major reason why many people dislike working here is considering how to have enough money to live on you need to cover others often or hope for a open shift and have a 2nd job. Which makes employees upset, most of my co-workers are exhausted and barely can have a good amount of sleep because of how bad the shifts can be. -management sucks. Most of my managers have attitudes most of the time, can play favorites for only employees who cover a lot of shifts and can be there all the time. I noticed my managers would become annoyed when helping me with my work since I wasn’t used to everything yet. Furthermore, one of my managers are never there and all they do is gossip with their favorite employees about how much it sucks and how certain employees suck. - rude and lazy co-workers. This can happen anywhere but particularly my location at least seems okay as long as you kiss up to the managers. There has been a few times at work my managers would sit and spend their time “working” just talking and ignore what needs to be done when we are doing recovery (cleaning up and folding the clothes back). Many employees leave things undone just for the next set of people to take care of it. - benefits suck. Since only part time you get no benefits, employee discount is the same discount as regular customers with a gap card. Sometimes customers get better deals than us as the employees. Never got PTO and the community service days suck. Beyond that theres no perks to working here considering everything. - too pushy on forcing things on customers. I have been told many times that I must lie to customers and make them get things even if I feel uncomfortable to force them. At least my location, it been lost sight of caring for customers and only care for their income. My managers have told me to put customers to the side or tell me to not even tell them the truth on gap cards. I really hate being a liar so I can’t pull myself to lie just to make someone waste their money or give me their email. For example one customer today was taking little long but I wanted to make sure she was happy with her purchase so I stayed patiently for her, my manager wanted me to cancel her purchase and push it to the side because she was taking to long and told me to continue with other customers. I feel at least that manager is the nicest one usually but I find that attitude for a store to be cruel, I really care about making my customers happy so I feel gap isn’t a good place because of that. If you are okay with lying and allowing the store to be a mess most of the time and act like its high school you would like it here but those are things I can’t tolerate.

Pros

Pay is competitive for fashion but not sufficient for the Bay Area. It's a casual work environment and they offer several on site social activities to promote engagement. They encourage volunteer events and match donations made to non-profit organizations. Their involvements with the local Boys and Girls club is admirable.

Cons

The retail climate is tough which can make for a stressful, volatile business environment. There is no loyalty to vendors and manufacturers who have worked with us for decades. Always pushing for better, more unrealistic margins. This is very dependent upon your team, but I did not see management value their better talent. Instead, they let you walk if you're too vocal about the necessary changes that should be made. Senior Managers and above are too disconnected from the day to day ground work. The dental benefits are great, however the medical provider, United Healthcare is terrible. I was often times left with a huge patient responsibility even while selecting doctors who were within the network, and appeals are not heard or followed up on. I was very disappointed with their coverage.
