Management needs work

Pros

Flexible scheduling for students, pay is ok, discount is good. If you have good co-workers, it can be pleasant to work there. If the management is smart, they don't let customers walk all over you.

Cons

Upper management is very disconnected from what is really going on, favoritism was a problem, if you do well in a section, you'll get stuck there even if the section head is terrible and causes more problems than solutions. It was stressful when arriving at work, you were greeted with all the problems the worker before you didn't take care of then expected to clean up their mess.

Pros

You get plenty of arm and leg exercise as a parcel clerk pushing carts. Plenty of opportunities to interact with customers, be cheerful to them and most will be happy and thank you. If it's a sunny day, 1-2 days before a holiday, or word hits that there might be a storm coming, more customers will come in, which means there's more people coming in and doing business. Managers are usually prompt about their 90-day reviews, their 6-month reviews, and their 1-year reviews; you'll get a review within 1 or 2 weeks of hittin g that milestone.

Cons

Fred Meyer forbids employees from accepting tips. Parcel clerks have to put back groceries from the backs of checkstands to a shelving unit (non-perishables like cereal, flour, canned goods) which is dumb since not many parcel clerks know where everything goes like anyone in the food department does. Parcel clerk job is minimum wage - look to change positions if you want a raise. If you're in school looking for a part-time 12-hour job don't be surprised if they initially schedule you on 20-26 hrs / week; we don't have very many parcels. If it's a sunny day, 1-2 days before a holiday, or word hits that there might be a storm coming, more customers will come in, which means there's more people coming in and taking the carts and leaving them all over the parking lot and sometimes outside the parking lot.

Pros

Truthfully, the deli is the last place you want to end up. According to most people. I actually enjoyed my time there because I always had at least 3 things to do at any given time. Being short-staffed and constantly suffering budget cuts makes sure that you always have more work to do than you can reasonably expect to get done. Sarcasm aside, I did like the amount of work. It was much better than stocking the same shelf for 2 hours or facing shelves. I also had an awesome manager who would defend us against the store director if the store director was in the wrong. My manager not only saved me from getting fired over a drunkard of a customer, she also recognized my hard work by jumping me to the pay cap after only 4 months of working there.

Cons

This is retail. Retail is not fun because customers don't realize how annoying and rude they are. Retail is also not fun because corporate always wants you to get more work done with fewer resources. The deli sucks because it typically loses a store money and directly interacts with customers, so you get both of the above extra hard. Shout outs to cashiers for having to deal with every customer, though. The pay cap was also much lower in the deli and came with a more stressful work environment than the rest of the store.
