Pros

Good salary, benefits, and job security, opportunities within different functions of the business (3-5 year job rotations), top-of-the industry training program, highly collaborative work environment, workplace flexibility becoming more the norm

Cons

The forced ranking system is in complete opposition to creating dynamic team-centric problem solving--your ranking (and salary) become benchmarked on your performance in the first two years; the company is slow to accept the changing work demographic; abysmal family leave benefits

Pros

* Salary * Size helps when working w/ vendors and third parties - a lot of weight to swing around. * Houston Campus is really nice * 401k matching

Cons

* Leadership framework incentivizes selfish and poor behavior from those seeking to climb the corporate ladder * Organization does not actively shed dead weight as frequently as it should. There are too many people sitting around collective paychecks. * Lack of vision/strategy across several of the major business lines. * Lack of solid, well-communicated vision/strategy for the corporation as a whole * Annual performance evaluation process incentivizes bad behavior, demoralizes large percentages of the employee population, and is overly time-consuming to administer.

Pros

-Provides good benefits (health insurance is very good, pension is generous for those who stay for a long career, 7% 401k match is above average for corporate America) -Campus is nice but in the middle of nowhere (so not really a positive)

Cons

-The Finance functions are FULL of boring, process oriented jobs. Do NOT join this company if you value creativity, independent thought, etc. Unless you are the type that never questions authority/super risk-averse, you will very quickly begin to dislike the relentless process oriented nature of your work. While your friends at other companies are off gaining valuable skills, you will be checking random boxes that management gets graded on, (literally) signing and filing documents, doing internal audits, etc. There are definitely some exceptions to this and some more interesting roles, but expect to spend a MINIMUM of 50%+ of your career at Exxon Controller's/Treasurer's/Tax jobs you don't like. -Finance function budgets have been cut for years (15-20 years now so don't believe management when they say it's because of bad times in the industry). Though that being said they are using bad times in the industry as an excuse to accelerate cuts and have now cut starting salaries for new hires (even while they still pay the old guard the same or more shares and so on). So basically the old guard milks the system while new people can paid about much less than those who joined years ago (and new hires get slower promotions, poorer raises, etc once they do join). -No bonuses for finance function employees for several years after joining. you will make less here than other oil majors. very little upside unless you're one of the very few. -Really bad management. They DO NOT care about your interests, family situation, location preference, department preference, anything when it comes to job assignments. They view everyone as a cog meant to fit any process job. This is a really good way (sarc) to build a company where people's skills sets are not at all matched with the roles they are in. -Probably the most bureaucratic corporation (or one of them) in America. Working for the government has less red type and more spirit than this place. -Controller's is a walking disaster. My assignments here were just jaw dropping. Awful retention, poor recruiting results, boring work. Treasurer's/Tax worsening too...no longer competitive at top schools...in the process of transitioning to a company that gets mostly/only hires from non-highly ranked schools (at least in the finance functions). -Suffocating culture...the kind of place where your manager doesn't want you to speak to his or her manager when they're not present. The kind of place where managers panic because you ccd or didn't cc someone "important." The kind of place where managers are scared to give their managers bad news. you get the picture.
