Pros

I really enjoyed working at EF.The school facilities were top notch and the staff and students were excellent and very respectful. We always got feedback from the DoS and senior teachers and they always offered their support when necessary. They also provides efficient training early on in the contract and give you a lot of notes and other support. There are also career opportunities available to those wishing to stay longer than a year

Cons

My recruiter blatantly lied to me.She offered me a ¥5,000 bonus upon passing probation and told me,via Skype and email, that it would be in my bank account once approved and that I would be entitled to a free domestic travel voucher anywhere in China. No pay arrived,or travel voucher, and when I told my DoS he was unaware that I was supposed to get benefits.I emailed my recruiter straight away and she insisted on lying, saying that she never offered me these benefits until I sent her back the email clarifying what what she had promised and then she refused to reply to my email. My DoS also emailed his supervisor who insisted on telling me that there was nothing that he could do because it wasn’t stated in my contract.I also raised the point during my exit interview and once again they insisted on only apologizing and didn’t bother to even look deeper into the issue.Kind of strange, right?

Hello, we are very sorry to hear about your experience. It’s not normal for a 5,000RMB bonus to be offered just for passing probation. There are some bonuses that are tied to specific criteria within our Kids & Teens schools. I’ve already informed our management about your situation and we would really like to hear from you to discuss your situation and if this is a training issue with one of recruiters we can rectify it. Please email us at teacher.feedback@ef.com.

Pros

Lovely co-workers Paid on time Lots chances for advancement within the company The lessons are pre-prepared so you don't have to plan your own Development courses offered at different parts of the year Overall, it's good for people with no experience who want to get their foot in the door in the EFL/ESL teaching world

Cons

Teachers work split shift (Afternoon-Night) and work long hours (9 hours) so the work-life balance is terrible. The pay is not great for the amount of hours required to work. Which is okayish for foreign staff if you're planning on staying in China but it's hard to save even a decent amount of money if you ever want to return to your home country. Local Teachers get paid even less than foreign teachers. Which is ridiculous considering the high requirements for their local teachers. There is very little on-going support for the foreign teaching staff. Very high teacher turnover rate Not very much paid-holiday time There is WAY too much focus on sales and customer satisfaction. They pretty much force you to constantly be contact with students in and out of the center Management is not very appreciative of the work you do unless you teach and do EVERYTHING else exactly as they tell you. If you have your own way of doing things or are not naturally a social person they pretty much treat you like a problem they can't wait to get rid of. They never have students take any responsibility for their own learning, everything is dependent on sales staff, course consultants, and teachers. Overall, only teachers who want to get their foot in the door should teach with EF and I'd never recommend anyone teach there longer than 1-2 years maximum.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you are unhappy with your experience with us at EF English First. EF English First is a professional company, and our hiring process and contract aim to be as clear as possible. Before anyone accepts the offer to join us in China, we send teachers a copy of the contract to review in advance. Within each contract, terms are stated, and we work hard to maintain consistency so that teachers are treated equally and fairly. As well as offering a competitive local salary, we do offer further training opportunities and qualifications that you can take advantage of, should you choose to. As well as the Foundation TEFL, these courses offer a more in-depth study of language teaching as well as practical methodologies. Many of our sponsored training courses are internationally recognized and will open up further career opportunities in the language teaching industry. If you would like to reach out to us, please send an email to teacher.feedback@ef.com.
