Pros

The academic-like environment, the noble cause, the great people, the beautiful campus, the salary, the challenging work, the status and the vacation time. The location looks like a college campus and there are some parts of the organization that feel very academic. Everyone in the organization seems to be mindful of what we are trying to do; convinced of our higher purpose. With that brings a strong sense of community and responsibility for excellence to your colleagues. Everyone seems to know we are working to benefit test-takers, their parents and institutions and therefore behaves in ways that will ultimately benefit them.

Cons

The hierarchy and entrenched traditional ways of working are big downsides. New ways of thinking or doing things are not encouraged company-wide. You have to wait for permission to speak to suggest something new. It is a top down organization. You could be sitting next to someone fervently working to solve the same problem you are working on but because communication and the sharing of ideas, even amongst colleagues in the same department, is not encouraged you will not know it until it is too late - like when you both solicit input from the same person in another division, or talk to an external colleague or vendor.

Pros

The work is interesting and ends up mattering to people, and the internal goals are noble, despite whatever bad press they might receive. Since ETS is a nonprofit, they can afford to do things the right way instead of just trying to do them the cheapest way, and they can afford to spend money on research and development that further the state-of-the-art.

Cons

Since it's a non-profit, the pay is relatively low, and the amount of internal bureaucracy is very high. Also, the matrix organization style, while having the benefit of putting people doing the same work together, has the serious problem that people working on the same project are often in completely different groups.

Pros

It is interesting, detail-oriented work. Staff are extremely dedicated. It is the most ethical company for which I've ever worked. The company lives its mission statement to provide access to everyone, everywhere in the world. Management is extremely understanding and accommodating to staff when it comes to family leave\childcare\eldercare issues.

Cons

They no longer provide employees with salary ranges or bands. Compensation is huge secret. The company has become extremely top heavy. Metrics are kept for everything to the cost of productivity and service. Many projects have more managers than workers. Many resources are allocated to Six Sigma projects that do not deliver results.
