Pros

ESPN is the gold standard in television. More than the broadcast nets, more than most other cable networks, ESPN is the choice of fans, advertisers and its business partners. It was nice to get tickets to games (good ones not just so-so ones) and get vendors, or anyone else for that matter to take your call immediately. Oddly, you don't have to be a huge sports fan (although it helps) to work there. Some of the most successful people didn't grow up in sports. Also, George Bodenheimer stands out as one of the nicest and smartest guys (common sense smart as well as business) as there ever was. He's the kind of guy you'd work for anytime.

Cons

Where to start...it's still the old boys club. No matter what anyone says, it is. If you buddy up and play golf with the boys, you're golden and they love you. It also helps to be a boy. Very few women hold senior level positions of SVP and up. ESPN is one of those places if you don't "drink the Kool-Aid" you're toast. Let's also be honest about diversity. Senior managers, for the most, part, pay lip service but do nothing about it. When a position opens up, the majority of the time it will be filled by someone who looks like the boys. Leadership is a big deal but the leadership and career advancement is focused on the boys club members.

Pros

Access to sporting events. Sports content is more fun to work with than, say, mortgage financing or actuarial accounting. The company has an extraordinary amount of money with which to pursue different initiatives. Also, with Disney as a parent organization, ESPN offers certain "built in" business synergies with a giant entertainment conglomerate that reaches millions of people every year. The end product that ESPN produces (television production of games as well as Sportscenter) is highly regarded and of pretty high quality (although getting more and more overproduced). Working at ESPN is also a great conversation starter at barbecues. People love to talk about ESPN....

Cons

Senior management is pretty incompetent overall. ESPN is a traditional top-heavy organization - too many VPs, SVPs and EVPs. Big egos with mediocre educational backgrounds constitute most of senior management. I've found that most senior management soaks in the perks of their titles - first class airline travel for anyone V.P. or higher, window offices, the ability to approve their own expense reports, great tickets to sporting events, etc. But in the end, most of them don't actually have any real deliverables. 80% of ESPN's revenue comes from deals that it struck with cable companies years and years ago. The senior management now could be cut by 2/3 and nobody would notice a thing in the end.

Pros

There are TV's on every desk. There are lots of affordable neighborhoods within easy commuting distance to Bristol. Benefits are pretty good, as a part of the Disney corporate family. Working on sports is a dream job for many people.

Cons

Long hours are expected, and results in lots of turnover in the lower ranks. Bristol is a little too quiet of a place for single people. There are layers upon layers of management, leading to lots of jobs that are not quite as important or as empowered as they might seem. Senior Management has alarmingly little credibility among the workforce - the offices keep getting bigger and the cubes keep getting smaller.
