Pros

Newbies are exposed to varied and challenging work where they can learn a lot, but training and teaching is not a strong point

Cons

A very hostile environment - a lot of senior staff in the Underwriting/Operations division would bad mouth their employees openly to other colleagues and make fun of them behind their back, which is disgusting behaviour and very unprofessional. Majority of the people there were not friendly, instead all too happy to laugh at others and extremely arrogant - I genuinely can say I found about 6 people easy to get along with. I read an earlier comment where someone described this as a very "Cliquey" place to work, and I 100% agree. They EXPECT you (even if you are young or new) to put in 2-4 hours of overtime EVERY DAY during the busy season, AND work weekends - understaffed, overworked and underpaid. During the busiest season, you are not allowed to take time off if you are unwell. They do not care or value their staff at all. Certain people were put in a position of management when they were clearly too young and immature to handle the pressure of it - The Team Leader I had would often snap and swear at me in earshot of her managers, and got away with it. I was appalled that she clearly thought it was okay to belittle and humiliate her junior colleagues, and took advantage of her position of power, which she should not have been given. Work here if you must, to get the experience - but don't stay longer than 2 years. Not a nice environment at all, and no career path from there. Whole company is going down the drain. I'm glad to have got out when I did.

Pros

Everyone seems to go for 3 hour lunches and its no big deal. Friendly after work drinking culture. Great new offices. Good health care and share option packages. Pension scheme also good.

Cons

Nepotism! You can forget trying to get promoted unless you are connected. It's not about working hard or being talented i. They value white middle class public school boys and seem to fast track them. There was a massive 'diversity drive' just to tick the boxes but the reality is they were never being promoted. They seem to recruit anyone who is someones son or daughter. Senior management treat the junior staff very badly. Pay is extremely poor and below market compared to other clubs. No inflationary pay. No pay rises or bonuses for the last two years unless you are senior management.
