Pros

My fellow co-workers are some of my best friends I've made working there.

Cons

Lets start here, I've worked for this company when it was Car Sense. This WAS a great company to work for. Once the company was sold and became Car Shop the core values of Car Sense went out the window. Employees have left this company hand over fist, the family oriented caring for the employees is out the window. I gave this company 13+ years, when I put in my 3 week notice the executive team & president of the company basically didn't say a word to me, not even an in person thank you. I got a meaningless txt message saying thank you for all the years you been with the company. The sad part is I seen them all before I left and didn't get a in person thank you or even a hand shake. During covid they cut my manager salary in half but didn't cut other managers salary. So I fall behind in my bills while I was doing multiple people's jobs in my department at the dealership. I was doing the Lot Attendant position, Quality control position, photographer position, Detail position, my own position & also I was washing cars on the lot everything I could to keep the department up and running. We went from a 13 man crew to 3 I would like to thank Issac & Hamza who didn't go on furlough and was told to stay like I was. Once again not even a thank you or a good job to any of us. I got a salary decrease while other managers didn't. I was actually written up because myself and other managers had a problem with it and I spoke out about it to another manager. Then the next day the president of Car Shop came to me and threatened my job and yelled at me in front of the driving team associate's. Ever since then there was a grudge held against me. 13+ years just to be treated like an employee who didn't matter during the pandemic! It was never explained to me why my salary was cut and other managers wasn't & I've been there longer then any other manager plus I was doing multiple jobs. We get forced to do survey's even though they say its not mandatory. The managers would get emails saying make sure your team fill out the survey with their names attached to the Google Doc even if the employee doesn't want to do the survey. Just so we can hang a banner for top work place, well it's not a top work place!!! The integrity and morals of Car Shop is no longer and it starts from the top of the executive team & president of Car Shop, they should lead by example not force you to do something while they do the complete opposite of what they preach! There is no praising of the managers of the department ever, all they do is beat you down and expect more & more from you, it's never good enough. The president of the company throws a hissy fit if the company buys you lunch and you don't leave a review on Google or Glassdoor. Sorry sir but your actions aren't genuine and your employees see right through the smoke and mirror tricks, people don't respect you and the Penske organization should take a deeper look into this company, this is why people are leaving the company left & right 10+ year people too. Our head of HR & Payroll left for better opportunity at other employers. Car Shop is a sinking ship with a turnover percentage out of control. The competitive wages is not even close you can go to a company like Target and push carts for more money, there is top detailers there making minimum wage!!! Don't worry they will be leaving soon if they haven't left already. Service techs are on the way out the door for more competitive rates, the service advisors are working 6 days a week with no time off & all that has been brought up and the company doesn't do anything about it work, work, work that is all that is ever cared about, you have senior A techs there who make less then the people you bring in the door to start. Let's not mention how we we're told not to hire people who wasn't vaccinated, equal opportunity employer huh! Also the employees who weren't vaccinated wouldn't get paid for missing time if they had Covid they had to use any PTO time they had to feed their families, but vaccinated employees who we're out during Covid got a all paid time off courtesy of the company and no PTO time was taken. That sounds like discrimination and favoritism to me, but HR allowed it!! If you are not part of the yes sir & do as I say and not as I do group you won't make it in this company! Another example of a manager who had an approved day off to spend time with their child and didn't come in to help with snow removal got the cold shoulder from the president, he has now quit to my knowledge he was also there for more than 13+ years. The facility is out dated techs equipment is not working and out dated, the sales equipment is the same but they want more & more with less & less equipment to run more officially. The WiFi & printers barely work when I left the company. The lack of leadership from the executive team should be looked at feom the Penske Organization. Also back when we we're Car Sense the reviews for Google were incentives just to move the rating up to above a 4.0 Ask yourself is this really a company you want to work for..... Again the PENSKE Organization should take a deeper look into this and start asking questions because this is happening at ALL LOCATIONS, you'll be surprised what you find !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pros

At lest you get your Sunday's off

Cons

The new COO is the most arrogant, out of touch person I have ever met. Thinks he is above every one. Managers constantly reach out to you on your day off, even though they promise the job is only 40 hours and you can have a work life balance. They pride themselves on not being a typical dealership, but their actions prove otherwise. Pushing warranties, trying to force people to buy. The sales managers care about nothing other than numbers. Sales consultants are required to fix every other departments' mistakes. Yet if they make one, it is the end of the world. Selfish company that does not give raises, nor compete with other pay plans out there. The only thing they want to tell you about is the Christmas party. They beg for 5 star reviews. If a negative one is posted, the executives follow by posting fake 5 stars. Don't believe me? Just check after every negative review. Trending in the wrong direction.

-Thanks for sharing…there’s a lot to unpack here! I believe there are good answers to a lot of the questions you raise. First, CarSense promotes like crazy from within. We know that the best people can learn to be the most skilled, while the other way around is not necessarily true. Managers try their best to look out for their teams, so if there is an opportunity for a sales consultant, our managers will reach out to see if they are interested in a leadership role. (instead of missing the chance). In addition, it’s important to mention that the “numbers” have almost zero impact on what managers make, as they are paid a salary not commission! CarSense will always ask our employees to share how special it is to be a part of this team…and that kind of genuine enthusiasm and satisfaction is impossible to fake. I’m hearing in your words that you are disappointed, and may feel passed over. If you’re up for it, let’s get a coffee and figure out how to get better for the next opportunity. That goes for us too! Thanks for the post.

Pros

You get to work with some truly quality used automobiles. I was strictly a new car person until I started working at CarSense. You can feel good about what you are offering.

Cons

I've looked over many reviews of CarSense, and I'm hoping job seekers are intelligent enough to know that any business, especially a car dealership, couldn't possibly be as perfect as many of these reviews make it out to be. I'll start with some of the remarks on training : training consists of sitting at your desk your first day watching multiple pre recorded videos. I was originally told I would have a mentor, and that never occurred. I recently had my three month review and the member of management that gave it to me even remarked I didn't have one. You spend two full 8 hour work days with an outside trainer teaching you about the Allstate aftermarket products you sell. And then you have a one day training with one of the VP'S who is also titled as HR/cultural development. To hear people brag about his training, you would think you were about to listen to some prophet, when it ended up being nothing but common sense and a review of all the recorded videos you watch. CarSense prides itself in being non traditional in regards to car dealerships. Although I've never worked at a traditional dealership, I've interviewed with plenty and have worked with those who have. One thing that was initially attractive to me was the schedule. It sounds great, but make no mistake about it, traditional or non traditional dealership, the car industry is the car industry. Being scheduled certain hours are one thing, what you end up working is totally another. CarSense uses an "up" system, meaning you sign a list every day depending on when you get to work. The first person "up" gets to greet the first walk in customer, the second person mans the phones. Sounds fair, right? In a perfect world, sure, but it's not supervised and the rules change depending on who is there each day. It actually ends up being more of a hindrance than anything. I was scolded by a long time employee once because I answered the phone and it wasn't my turn to answer it, at least in his eyes. The non sense and immaturity that it breeds isn't worth it. I'm all for a traditional dealership on this sense, where one central person answers the phone and it's every man or woman for themselves. You are expected to cover CarSense philosophy with every customer you encounter. Doesn't matter if you already spoke with them over the phone and bored them to death with it, and if you don't, be prepared to be scolded. Many people who have questioned me about CarSense, including customers, want to know about "non commission sales people". Many people associate being non commission with it not being important to sell a car. Not the situation at all: you are not paid on the traditional commission structure, but you are paid on a volume bonus, and this is how you make the bulk of your income. You may be told during an interview that you can make $60000 or more a year. To do so, you need to focus on selling at least 20 cars or more a month. Which means handling 2 to 3 customers at a time, and can mean throwing that wonderful sounding schedule out the door. Prepare to deal with fellow employees who claim the customer you greeted is actually theirs, even though they didn't ask for them, and haven't spoke to them in months. I'm sure this is something you encounter in all car sales, but beware if it's your first time. There truly is no negotiating in the price of the car. When it comes to the price of the customers trade in, or what percentage rate the customer is looking for for financing, you are told the same thing, but you are also asked if a customer has a number in mind when talking about a trade, and financing begs and pleads with you to get the customer to finance through CarSense if they indicate they have their own financing or if they are paying cash. If the customer still decides to pay cash or deal with their own financing, don't be surprised if you witness a temper tantrum from the finance manager. There is also supposed to be no negotiating when it comes to finance or trade ins, but if a deal doesn't work out, you're asked if the customer had specific numbers in mind, which always left me wondering what it mattered if CarSense final numbers are what they are. It's beneficial for you to master selling the Allstate aftermarket coverages. It will benefit you financially and may eliminate you seeing the finance manager throw another tantrum. Keep in mind, you will be working in a large, open air building, where everything you say can be heard. If you don't sell a car to an opportunity, be prepared to be interrogated as to why. CarSense prides itself on being a faith based company, even going so far as to put bibles in every car they sell. The behavior I experienced from management on down was, at times, far from God like. I'm not one of those new age sickening politically correct types, but it is the 21st century, and some behaviors in the work place should be gone for good. I gave car sales a try, I had three offers made to me all at the same time and felt CarSense was the best choice. I'm thrilled to be out of the industry and just as happy to be away from CarSense

Thank you for your honest feedback. While no one likes to receive negative feedback, everyone, including CarSense can learn from constructive criticism. We will certainly take a look at all the items you mentioned in your review, but for now, I’d like to touch on a few of the areas. First, you are correct that you were never assigned a mentor. We simply dropped the ball. This was inexcusable and we will be sure correct this for all new Sales Consultants going forward. Regarding the culture of CarSense, it is something we totally believe in; therefore, we put a tremendous amount of emphasis on it. We are proud of the way our customers and associates are treated and want to convey that to our customers at every opportunity. You mentioned that management wants to know when a deal doesn’t work out if a customer had specific numbers in mind. CarSense realizes that there is as much to learn about car sales from both our buying customers as well as those that decide not to purchase from us. We listen to all the people who enter our doors – whether they buy or not. You’re right on target that we ask our sales consultants to be informed on our aftermarket offerings. That is why, during your training phase, that a full day is dedicated to this topic. After all, we can’t expect you to be a master at a product that we didn’t properly train you on. I’m sorry your time at CarSense was so short. I believe that over time you would have come to see that the CarSense way of working, including our Philosophy, makes for a rewarding work environment. Like my brother Scott once told me, it's not how you start the race , its how you finish that counts. We wish you nothing but the best in your future endeavors.
