Capital One - Great Place to Work

Pros

Compensation, Benefits. Capital One is probably one of the leading financial service companies in terms of pay. I've seen VPs and above at other institutions come to Capital One, receive a lower 'title', yet make significantly more than they were making at their prior employer. Work is interesting as well, particularly as we attempt to integrate 2 regional banks that we brought within the last couple of years.

Cons

Bureacracy. Capital One got in trouble with Regulators a few years back for the lack of a formalized compliance program, so of course the company did what any institution does in those situations, which is to over-engineer their remediation efforts. This has caused the company to become less nimble and innovative as it used to be.

Pros

Ability to work with your boss to develop a framework for your projects, flexibility in work hours, able to take classes at capital one university. Great reputation among many business schools

Cons

Less career opportunities than if starting at a big bank or a consulting firm, where many employees wish to go afterwards. Frequent job rotations and very young company / employees make getting "expert" opinions almost impossible in some divisions.

Pros

Capital One is excellent about supporting work/life balance to the point where a lot of employees take advantage of this feature by spending a great deal of time "working from home". Senior Management does try to focus on recognition, but sometimes it is the wrong recognition.

Cons

Senior management has no clue. Specifically, the Directors and Vice Presidents have no strategic vision and are off hiring consultants who end up saying the same things as the Managers/Senior Managers. Decreased responsbility of middle management
