Tough work environment, interesting tech, poor benefits

Pros

Rapid growth, interesting tech and generally friendly colleagues are upsides of working at clear. Some good fringe benefits like food and stand up desks.

Cons

Down sides, of which there are plenty, include: Erratic and dictatorial leadership who create an underlying tension in the office (office is noticeably more calm when certain people at the top are out). Constant pressure to rush things into production that aren't ready. Lack of benefits, expensive medical (especially for those with families), no retirement, no equity for most employees, little to no communication by largely invisible HR folks, rigid work schedule which is atypical of most NYC tech companies. Open office environment which is loud, distracting and antithetical to productivity, especially for the concentration needed by developers. There is a sense that many people here are just biding their time until they either put in enough resume time, they get another offer or get fired.

Don't Believe The Positive Reviews

Pros

Great colleagues to work with in the field and some really great people at HQ below the Senior Leadership Team Level.

Cons

Don't believe the positive reviews you read on glassdoor. Anytime a negative review is posted the SLT reviews and then encourages (requires) existing HQ staff to write positive reviews. CEO and rest of SLT have no touch with reality and have extremely unrealistic expectations. Salaries are extremely low unless you're on the SLT, then salaries are massively inflated which further brings the SLT out of touch with the rest of the work force.

Toxic Corporate "Culture"

Pros

*some of the people but many are leaving or have left *work from anywhere august was cool *the new office looks cool *Caryn is a terrible people leader but a great business person so there is confidence in the longevity of the business

Cons

*this company is more toxic than chernobyl and most of it stems from leadership *competition within teams and zero trust *failing isn't okay at clear so it takes forever to get something done. no one wants to be the one to make the decision on something that fails. when something does fail hope you're not the lowest level person on the team or the blame will fall on you. zero accountability from management at all levels. *little room innovation and most decisions are driven from the business versus tech and product. new CTO may help change this but remains to be seen if Caryn will let him *no actual HR team. there are people on HR but there is no care for employee relations issues or fixing the toxic culture *commitment to diversity and inclusion is a joke. very performative and won't actually invest in any resources but created a council so leadership can say we value diversity. no programs or policies have come from it in 1 1/2 years *there are people that can get away with anything at clear (even obvious discrimination in some cases) because they've been with the company for so long or they're "really good at what they do". the response is usually an eye roll and "that's just how they are"
