Masters of micromanaging failure

Pros

Good benefits. Lots of parking spaces.

Cons

The 1 thing great leaders do....great leaders take responsibility for failures of strategy and failures of execution. But don’t expect this to be the case at Bodybuilding.com. The leadership at Bodybuilding has created and empowered a culture of mistrust and disrespect that leaves staff members feeling burnt out and frustrated. The refusal to accept responsibility for poor planning and execution results in constant scrambling with not clear direction. This is not a path to success yet it is the path Bodybuilding.com’s leadership forges day in and out. Cutting costs and maintaining a stranglehold on strategic direction in hopes of doing just enough to hit top line goals is not only disrespectful to the passionately dedicated staff that work each day to be the best at what they do. It is also self-defeating in that a continual refusal to meaningfully respect and support staff members results in poorer company performance. The company is on a terrible trajectory, made only worse by the behavior of Bodybuilding’s leaders who continue to drive out talent while actively refusing to recognize the systemic failures that are causing it. Amongst all of the shifting priorities, unclear direction, the disengaged CEO who has given the direction of the company over to horrific leaders one thing is abundantly clear....things will continue this way and will only get worse.

Pros

Flexible hours, on-site gym, and strong 401k match.

Cons

Unfortunately the leadership at Bodybuilding.com just doesn't have any qualities that someone running a company should have. They don't know how to lead and do not work well with others. There is no clear direction to push towards and the goals of the company as a whole change very rapidly. There isn't any trust in the specialized experts they hired. This has resulted in an endless stream of contractors coming in and out o the company. As a side effect of this mistrust, micromanagement is at an all-time high. It has gotten to the point where the employees are no longer empowered to do their jobs. Employees are seen as a tool to do exactly what the CDO wants. This has caused many competent employees to move onto bigger and better things. The mistrust, micromanagement, and lack of leadership skills have created a very negative work environment.
