Pros

Big 5 Sporting Goods offers and excellent employee discount off of merchandise, 401k with company match 100% for the first 2% then 50% for the next 2%. Health benefits are great (PPO or HMO) and are fully employer paid. Life insurance is provided at 1.5 times annual salary, and you have the option to purchase additional coverage.

Cons

Pay is low for supervisors (about 25% below industry average). Store is chronically understaffed by 20%. Supervisors and managers frequently have to work through their lunch and breaks because they are the only "manager on duty." Everything is based on making the sales for the week. There is a ratio (sales dollars / labor hours). The higher the sales the more labor hours (the more employee will be on the schedule). Store managers tend to always work 4 mornings, and 1 evening shift. They frequently staffed additional employee when they were working, and fewer when they were off. The managers reasoning was they assigned projects and therefore needed more employee working with them. This, however, left the co-managers/supervisors with fewer employee when they were the "manager on duty" increasing the likelihood of there being a customer dissatisfaction incident.
