Pros

BHP is a global brand, recognsied anywhere. People realise the screening process employees go through, so to have that name on your resume is considered a good tick in the box. I was exposed to the mine workshop being a mechanical engineer, and the entire summer duration was spent on a dragline shutdown plus some other design work in the office. There is so much to learn, and everything is so big its overwhelming, but it wacks you in shape faily quickly. The company employees are great people, and the mining town is the same. We all know each other and its one big family. The hours were your average 7am to 5 pm finish, although some days youd stay late. Overall its a good company for those engineers, scientists, commercials wanting to go out there and experience a real industry.

Cons

The reason I didnt join BHP as a graduate was the fact I realised it would be a long while before I would get the business exposure that I wanted. It would take you 10 years there to get the business exposure that I could get in a more flatter organisation in 5 years. If machines and equipment are your gig, then you wont go wrong with this decision. The other challenge I went through was the entire lifestyle outside work. Its the same people really wearing different clothes. You wont get the best coffee in those towns, and sushi is not something youd find out there. So I guess the decision is yours with what you want to do with your lifestyle. They will only atttract you with the money they offer you, cause really thats all they have control over. You will not get to see senior managers or even talk to them being so remote.

Pros

Well known company, good facilities, opportunities to work abroad, good working habit, people take their jobs seriously, employer negotiated rental car price.

Cons

Long hours, definitely. people are generally older and the coporate culture is much more serious than a place with lots of younger people.

Pros

BHP Billiton is a large, solid mining company. In currrent times, those with technical skills have job security, good financial benefits

Cons

Unless you are in a senior position, it is quite difficult to move between business units and hence opportunity to advance can be limited.
