Pros

Good compensation compared to other jobs in the market. While this is dependent on specific job position, most people enjoy flexible working hours, and can work from home in short advance notice. In general, people in Avaya are really great to work with. The folks I closely work with are very nice, polite and technically capable which makes working for Avaya enjoyable for me.

Cons

The company has caught on the (false) notion that work can get done faster and cheaper by outsourcing and employing more people in other parts of the world. The folks who make these decisions sometimes forget that what made Avaya successful in the past is recruitment of technical talent in the U.S. and the geographical proximity of technical people when working on product development. The two main problems with outsourcing in Avaya are the lack of technical expertise by the folks hired in other countries, and time zone differences. It makes it very slow to coordinate projects that span across multiple time zones. At some point in the future, the company will have to make a decision on either to consolidate its remaining R&D force in couple of key locations (U.S. and Europe) and give up outsourcing to cheap labor, or outsource its R&D entirely.

Pros

Pay's OK. 3 weeks vacation is nice. Interesting work at times. For the most part, the people you work with are very competent, interesting, and professional. Peers tend to be very helpful and willing to help. Genuine desire to do what's right for the customer and to produce good products with in the constraints imposed by poor upper management.

Cons

Lousy senior management that's only looking out for themselves. No job security unless you're working in India. Many people train their overseas replacements. Each year real compensation drops as cost of benefits goes up. Lots of hurry up and wait. Don't expect a severance package when you're finally laid-off. Lots of pressure.
